Cannot believe it’s been almost been a week since I was sitting in the backseat of a car, driving up to #france #normandy #normandie
These are the highlights:
#honfleur - this is the little charming Norman port village we stayed in and it was just such a pretty place!
#montsaintmichel - I mean, the sheer beauty of this place is just indescribable! Every #medievalhistory fan must visit this place!

#omahabeach #omaha - we visited this place and how appropriate since Rememberance Sunday was just the week before #dday #history #lestweforget
#bayeux - The #bayeuxtapestry - this 70m long embroidered cloth was basically like a medieval comic strip celebrating William the Conqueror’s triumph over King Harold. THIS WAS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!! I have been obsessed with the tapestry since uni days and my heart stopped a little when I finally saw this!! The #graffiti of the knight spraying the wall with the tapestry’s characters was really cute. Loved #bayeuxcathedral too with it’s beautiful dome. #cathedral
Lastly, we went to the Normandy #warmuseum and this was the picture that seemed to jump out at me. It was so touching, seeing the locals giving American troops drinks to celebrate.

Today, I’ve had the great privilege of meeting Brian Guy, veteran of the 246th Field Company Royal Engineers who took part in the liberation of Normandy in 1944.
Brian was involved in many campaigns in Europe and was wounded on two different occasions. He will never forget the first time he was hit when one of his comrades stepped on a mine right next to him. Brian survived his wounds and many months of combats but many of his friends paid the ultimate sacrifice like his young fellow who walked on the mine. Brian has never been back to Normandy since the war. So many of his friends were killed in 1944 and 1945 and it would be too difficult for him to visit their grave. However, Brian is very active on internet to share the story of 246th Field Company including the men he has served with. In 2010, he shared on a forum the following poem dedicated to all the young men that never came home.
On Norman soil, they fought and died.
Now young men's graves in rows abound.
In Mother Earth's arms, now sanctified,
The fragrant flowers of our youth are found.
And yet, to rise again, as in a distant song.
Small voices that call, in dead of night.
Fleeting figures only in our dreams belong.
Alas, they fade, in dawn's bright light.
I see them yet, a sad, forgotten throng.
Shadowed, lost faces, marching on.
Over dusty roads, and high golden corn.
The call of long lost friends are borne.
We must not forget, the flowers of our days,
Lest they lay unquiet, in numbered graves.
For we lived, and loved, and life was sweet.
Still yet, for us, awaits our last retreat.

Flowers of our youth, now long since past.
Our sweet autumn days are fading fast.
We, who are left, flowered in our prime.
Enjoyed golden moments, on borrowed time.
Remember our friends, who passed this way.
For all our tomorrow's, they gave their today's,
On Utah and Omaha, Juno, Sword and Gold.
Oh! Dear Lord! See that they grow not old.

Such a thrill when you "discover" something like this in the middle of a forest. Ruin of a windmill, built in 1591. The stonework is beautiful, with stone chosen and fitted so well that very llttle mortar was used to hold them together. Lovely detail around the door AND a hidden face sculpted on one of the stones #France #Francia .#Normandia #Normandie #Normandy #fôretdepirou #forestofpirou #moulindebeauregard #moulin #windmill #xvièmesiècle #16thcentury #autumn #automne
