این عکسی است که تلسکوپ هابل از کهکشان کارتویل گرفته است .ظاهر کهکشانها اصولا به این شکل نیستند. انیشتین در سال هزارو نهصدو شانزده میلادی مفهومی به نام
gravitational waves
را پیش بینی کرد .چهاردهم سپتامبر دوهزارو پانزده این مفهوم مشاهده شد و بعد از حدودا یک سال به اثبات رسید و علنا به عنوان یکی از بزرگترین کشف های قرن بیست و یکم اعلام شد.
کهکشان کارتویل حدودا پانصد میلیون سال نوری با کهکشان ما فاصله دارد . نکته جالب درباره ظاهر این کهکشان این است که برخورد کهکشانی کوچکتر با این کهکشان
(طبق مفهوم gravitional waves)
امواجی را در فضا ایجاد کرده است که ذرات و غبار و گازها را به اطراف آزاد کرده است و همانطور که در عکس میبینید حلقه ای زیبا دور کهکشان شکل گرفته است .
در حال حاضر کهکشانی که ما در آن زندگی میکنیم (کهکشان راه شیری) در حال نزدیک شدن به کهکشان همسایه اش یعنی اندرومدا می باشد. در اینده ای دور (حدود 5 میلیارد سال دیگر)این دو کهکشان با هم برخورد خواهند کرد و تحولی عظیم در دنیای اطراف ما و در آسمانمان رخ خواهد داد

What happens when two supermassive black holes collide? Until last year, we weren’t quite sure. Gravitational waves!
Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time originally predicted by Albert Einstein more than 100 years ago, but confirmed for the first time in 2016 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). To date, LIGO has made four detections of gravitational waves emanating from the mergers of black holes. Einstein pictured these waves as ripples in the fabric of space-time produced by massive, accelerating bodies, such as black holes orbiting each other.

Gravitational wave observatories detect ripples in spacetime. The detectors are in an L shape. As a gravitational wave passes through, 1 arm is stretched and the other is squeezed ↕️➡️⬅️ The difference between the 2 arms is then measured and the gravitational wave signal is recorded. The observatories are so sensitive, the distance that's measured is 1/1000th the width of a proton.🔬
LIGO (Laser Intereferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) has three detectors in the US 🇺🇸: one in Louisiana; the other two (in the same vacuum tubes) are at the Hanford site, in Washington (inspiration for the picture). The arms that store the lasers are 2 to 4 km in length📐

There's also an operational detector in Italy (VIRGO) 🇮🇹 and detectors under construction in both India (INIDGO) 🇮🇳 and Japan (KAGRA) 🇯🇵

It was wonderful last night connecting with all the artists I'm showing with at the "Breaking Illusions: Artist as Scientist" exhibit.
