Dr. Frasconi, one of our speakers, received his Physics degree at the Bologna University. He was involved in the L3 experiment at LEP and in the LAA Project at CERN. He was also responsible of the development of the first vertex chamber installed within the ZEUS detector at DESY Laboratory. Since 1997 dr. Frasconi works at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics of Pisa (INFN Pisa) in the Gravitational Physics field and he is deeply involved in the Gravitational Waves research and studies. In 2016, together with the colleagues of the VIRGO and LIGO Collaborations, he has been awarded with the “Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics” for the great results obtained. Recently, his professional achievements have been underlined in the observation of two new events (GW170814 and GW170817) by using the Advanced VIRGO interferometer and confirming the first direct observation of Gravitational Waves (GW150914) on Earth.

Round and round they go - then BOOM! This animation begins with the final moments of two neutron stars (the super-dense cores of exploded massive stars), whirling around each other in a galaxy 130 million light-years away. Gravitational waves (rippling disturbance in space-time, shown here as pale arcs) bleed away orbital energy, causing the stars to move closer together and merge.
As the stars collide, this explosive event emits light across a series of different wavelengths - first gamma rays (magenta), then ultraviolet (violet), then visible and infrared (blue-white to red) and once the jet directed toward us expanded into our view from Earth, X-rays (blue). Our Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope witnessed this event on August 17, 2017 and we watched it unfold over multiple days with a variety of other telescopes, including the Swift spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope (@NASAHubble), the Spitzer Space Telescope, our Chandra X-Ray Observatory (@NASAChandraXray) and our NuSTAR mission. The detectors at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) received a gravitational wave signal just 1.7 seconds before the first light was seen by Fermi, making this the first event observed in both light and gravitational waves.

Fantastic speech from one of my heroes, Dr Claudia De Rahm (posted about her some time ago!), presenting at Imperial College a talk about Gravity and Gravitational Waves, Dark Matter (basically everything that we don’t understand we call that Dark Matter), and how can we tell that the Universe is forever expanding by studying gravity and how it changes. Understanding Gravitational waves has dramatically advanced our knowledge of physics. Me, 16years old, I am proud to say that I could follow *most* (ok maybe not that equation on the board!)... it shows what an amazing speaker Dr Rahm is! Simulation ✨that shows the collision between a pair of neutron stars, marked by ripples through the fabric of space-time and a flash brighter than a billion suns. It has been witnessed for the first time a few months ago.
The extraordinary sequence, in which the two ultra-dense stars spiralled inwards, violently collided and, in all likelihood, immediately collapsed into a black hole, was first picked up by the US-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Ligo).
As its twin detectors, in Louisiana and Washington state, picked up tremors in space-time that had spilled out from the merger 130m light years away, an alert went out to astronomers across the globe. Within hours, 70 space- and ground-based telescopes swivelled to observe the red-tinged afterglow, making it the first cosmic event to be “seen” in both gravitational waves and light.

Kip Thorne, along with Rainer Weiss and Barry Barish, received the Nobel Prize in Physics, for their contributions to the LIGO detector, which last year discovered the first gravitational waves. These were first predicted by Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity.

In the movie "Interstellar," the future of humanity depends on astronauts that encounter and fight the effects of super massive black holes as they try to save Earth. The planet is being ravaged by the effects of climate change.

The movie earned five Academy Awards in 2015. Kip is listed as a producer. I highly recommend it.

It was a great honor to meet the 2017 Nobel Prize winner, Prof. Kip Thorne. Kip won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on black holes and gravitational waves. The latter were discovered in 2015, and had been predicted to exist by Einstein more than one hundred years ago. Kip gave the physics colloquium yesterday at Columbia University where he discussed the geometrodynamics of space time near black holes.
A fun fact is that Kip was the scientific advisor and executive producer of the movie *Interstellar* famous for its realistic depiction of light near the event horizon of a black hole.
During his talk, I learnt that the prediction of the shape of the signal for the black hole collision that produced the gravitational wave detection in 2015 was driven by computer simulations more so than analytic work (but theory, observations and simulations are all in agreement). I was also reminded that the power outputted from the two black holes colliding was 50 times more than the power outputted at the present moment by all stars in observable Universe (!). Additionally, Kip discussed how you don’t actually get “spaghettified” (stretched by the torques from the black hole while you’re approaching its event horizon) if you’re approaching a spinning black hole near its pole (spin-axis). Instead you’ll actually be squashed. Lastly, Matthew McConaughey would *probably* not have survived his endeavor into a black hole ;) but they had him exist between two approaching singularities.

~From very small to larger than the sun ~ I visited the observatory a while back. The clouds rolled in before we could see any stars, but I'd say the future of physics at UMBC is still pretty bright :) #gravitationalwaves #physicsfun
