One of my favorite exhibition in 2017: "Treasures from the wreck of the Unbelievable", by Damien Hirst @damienhirst.
First big personal exhibition by Hirst in Italy (after the 2004 retrospective at National Archeological Museum of Napoli) divided in the two great locations of Pinault Collection in Venice, assigned together to a single artist for the very first time: Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, over 5.000 meter.
This gigantic project, has been judged too ambitious, expensive, crazy, and that's some of the reasons why I looked forward to visit it, along with my love for Hirst.
The idea, realised in many years, sounds weird: the story of the ancient shipwreck of the "Unbelievable" ("Apistos", original ancient Greek name) and the exhibition is composed by its precious load: the majestic treasures collected by the freedman Aulus Calidius Amotan, destined to the legendary temple of Sun God.
The whole story is fake, and this is a very contemporary issue, if we consider that today media are responsible for the diffusion of fake news, and the consequent difficulty to distinguish real and fake also for educated people.
And one of the most important aim of an artist is to offer people a critical perspective on current times.
Most of the pieces of this huge collection, from little manufacturing to big sculptures, are made both in the "original" status (pretending that they come from the ocean floor, covered by coral and mollusks) and the Museum "reconstruction".
Pieces are inspired by different periods in history - from Maya to ancient Egypt.
But Hirst goes further and you can find some current icons such as Mickey Mouse or Transformers, right next to an ancient Asian sculpture.
The exhibition also includes a documentary of the rescue, with real cranes and divers.
