#DYK helium is a necessary ingredient to keep an MRI functioning? Liquid helium cools the magnets to minus 452 degrees Fahrenheit, just above absolute zero. But there’s currently a shortage of helium in the U.S. That’s where Freelium comes in. Freelium is advanced magnet technology that only requires 10 liters of liquid helium, whereas conventional MRIs need as much as 10,000 liters. #GE #healthcare

A #DRONEWEEK view of Lombok, Indonesia, where some of our mobile TM2500 #gasturbines live. Derived from our CF6 aircraft engine, the TM2500 is like a #jetengine on wheels. It takes only 11 days to install and operate and 10 minutes to reach full power. Twenty TM2500's can deliver 500MW to nearly 4 million homes in Indonesia, creating a microgrid that brings reliable power to a country made up of thousands of islands.

#DRONEWEEK continues in Linthal, Switzerland. Here, a drone overlooks the Limmern Pumped-Storage
#hydroelectric plant. Powered by four of our pumped hydro turbines, the plant generates energy by capturing 23 billion gallons of flowing water. It can also store excess energy from solar and wind power to pump the water 2,300 feet back up the mountain. This process creates a supply of potential energy, almost like a battery, able to generate 1,000MW of energy in just minutes. Swipe through to see more.

Next stop on our #DRONEWEEK tour: the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai. Dubai has an average of 300 sunny days a year. That makes it an ideal place to capture #solarenergy. We’re providing a critical piece of the puzzle—the inverter. Inverters convert the direct-current electricity produced by the solar panels into alternating current that can then generate up to 5,000MW of power. When this solar park is completed in 2030 it will be the largest installation of its kind in the region, providing enough power for 250,000 homes in Dubai. Swipe through for an insider’s look. Welcome to #DRONEWEEK 2017. Our first stop is British Columbia, Canada, home to @PatternEnergy’s Meikle Wind Project. With 61 #GE wind turbines, Meikle generates enough #renewableenergy to power up to 54,000 Canadian homes. Two different models of our turbines—the 2.5MW and the 3.2MW—are strategically placed throughout the farm to capture wind power as efficiently as possible. This virtual model of one of our turbines is what we call a #digital twin. It helps us see the entire lifespan of the turbine—from insights on past and present performance to predicting future performance and maintenance needs. How? The physical turbine is outfitted with sensors connected to the Industrial Internet through our Predix software. Predix allows us to build and run digital twins to capture data insights in real-time. Real-time insights means real-time solutions.

Advanced plasma atomization is a process that turns titanium wire into super fine spherical grains. When the wire enters the inner chamber at the tip of vessel, three plasma jets instantly atomize it at 3,000 degrees Celsius. Its rotor alone spans the length of more than one-and-a-half American football fields, and each blade is as long as the entire wingspan of a Boeing 747-8. James + Digital Blade Tip Grinder = a precision #powercouple. James uses a crane to load a CFMLEAP engine core into the grinder, then carefully monitors the grinder as it performs the #cuttingedge dry grinding process. Together they grind the blade tips for #CFMLEAP engines to a tolerance of a thousandth of an inch, which is roughly the thickness of a human hair. So you could say this couple is revolutionizing how jet engines are made, hair by hair.
