I have a continual supply of perennial hens and chicks that grow around the base of the Arbovitae (Tree/evergreen) They tolerate the snow and deep freezes. I just heavy cover with leaves. In the spring remove the leaves and pretty soon will reproduce with runners/plantlets. This group had been around for several years.🌱💚👩🏼‍🌾

Looking like the Cantaloupe are going to keep on producing right up until we get a Frost. Definitely going to try some of these seeds next Season. They are on the smaller side, but they are so sweet 🍈🌿💚😊

It's time for another garden tip... As we move forward with fall, I start moving the potted plants along a south facing wall. This is where the last few summer potted plants will get the most sun ☀️ and will extend their growth for a couple weeks longer then if I left them on a North facing wall. Did you grow plant food in containers this year? If not have you wanted to grow in containers? .

World's cutest baby cantaloupe! For scale, the almost-3-year-old is holding it. Although really adorably small, it was so juicy and sweet!

We had our first frost last night and I didn't prepare the garden. Most of my hot, summer plants took a major hit, so today was harvest day! Making tomatillo-style green tomato salsa has unexpectedly landed a top spot on my to-do list! 🌶🍉🍈🍅🍂🍁☃

This weeks meals from meal prep last Sunday. Lesson here when you're veggies are prepared or already chopped and ready to cook, you will eat the right portion of Veggies you need in a day. On any diet... plant based or not you shouldn't be asking whether your eating enough protein but whether your eating enough veggies for what your body needs. What steps are you taking to eat more veggies this Friday?

Meal planning and prep did not disappoint this week. I felt well nourished and at ease when meal time came around. It really helps if you know how many portions of veggies fruits proteins carbs healthy fats seeds oil and nut butter you and the people you're feeding (family) need in a week. So thankful for this lesson, when your well nourished kick hungers a** and sugar cravings too. Are always feeling hungry and yet you're eating plenty? .

Pondering this quote I read on @drjessicaduncan website. What do my doctor or soon to be doctor friends think about this quote. How are today's doctors taught to teach nutrition education to heal their patients or as preventive care? Tell me love read and listening to others perspectives on health & wellness.

I feel like talking about balance today. In what we eat balance is key whether you're a vegan or not. Balance is also important in the soil. As I continue to complete my next blog post at turtle 🐢 speed on gardening without owning land, I figured let me just talk about my last blog again😊 It's about getting your garden bed ready with compost and a
complete organic fertilizer.

The key things of this organic fertilizer are seed meals and three types of agricultural limes.
Let's dive into just the lines, dolomite, gypsum, Ann's the common agricultural high calcium lime. All are from crushed rock. However each have different portions of nutrients that the other doesn't.

Dolomite has almost equal parts of magnesium and calcium. Gypsum has calcium sulfur. And reg ag lime has lots of calcium.
So you may be like uhmm where de nitrogen be, Margaret?
Well the answer is all laid out my blog post. (Link in profile)

However I believe there is not enough balance levels of nutrients in soils today. They've been taken from without returning any life giving nutrients it once had.

Calcium Magnesium and Sulfur are just some of the nutrients that are way out of balance, their is usually too little for the needs a tomato 🍅 or squash plant needs to thrive.
Nitrogen is vital but so are many other nutrients... in balance.

Sound 🔊on. Harvesting, cleaning, and preparing plant based food... is my weekly weekend rhythm. This week I'm trying something I never thought I would do, meal planning and prepping for the following week. I'm following the 21 day fix program vegan style to see if we are getting the right balance of plant foods.

Now that I'm done planning the two lessons I've learned is that we are a little short on amount of veggies we need to eat and we're actually eating a little too much protein and carbs.
But the ultimate judge of this system is how our bodies feel in the next week with these changes.
The other lesson is that we're doing right but growing our own food because they are key micro micro nutrients that are lost within hours of harvesting that are critical to the function of our bodies. Do you know one ☝🏿 nutrient that's lost within hours of picking?

(Redo friends who saw this pic already the caption didn't come through 😬) Red Okra >>swipe>>>Green Okra. It's okra season and for the third year in a row I'm wishing I had planted some in my garden.
Okra is easy to grow requiring minimal input from you hand. Plant it water well till a couple days after the seed sprout out of the soil. They are survivors and love the sun ☀️. They can wow 😳 you if your looking for something tall and beautiful to fill in your flower bed Or you can grow a few along the edges of the a community plot as harvesting is key getting the most out of each plant.

This is something beginner gardener may not know. I sure didn't until I worked on a farm.
The more you pick various plant including okra while keeping the main plant in tack in the ground ( and picking properly) the more that plant will put energy into creating more of it's self.
Pretty cool huh?

It's back and bushy, nasturtiums! I cut it back down to 12in off the ground in July when it was out of control big.. and it's grew back and filled in the edge of where my plot meets the fence.
.
This plant is super easy to grow! It doesn't even need fertile soil. Just 6 hours or more of sun ☀️ and watering every other day or every three days if no rain ☔️ during the week and this lady will blossom within 40 days from seed... You can even start it when it's still freezing outside in earlier spring and it will germinate and stay strong throughout the spring summer and fall season.
.
It also makes a wonderful ground cover in a flower bed or veggie bed.

Plus it a great plant to grow next to cucumber 🥒 as it repels cucumber beetles and acts as a host for other beneficial bugs.
.
Plus... they are edible swipe LEFT.
.
.
Have you tried to eat nasturtiums? Do you like them? Why or why not?

Look what 10 days can do. I'm still waiting for the parsnip to come in... they take so long to germinate more than 2 weeks and still waiting. Anyway in this companion patch I have parsnip, radish, and arugula. I also got spring onions here and there. This is the first fall section I started three weeks ago. Have you started your fall garden yet?

This is another person plot in the community gardens bed. Mine is a little behind but it's coming along I'll share it with you on my walk tomorrow. But it's so inspiring to watch others transform their 8x8 or 4*4 or whatever space they have into green edible and pretty ✨ .
