Are these guys signalling for help or doing synchronised yoga?
The use of the chair here - clinching the seat with the legs, one above, one below -is to adjust a pesky misalignment of the sacroiliac joint. It resembles a variation of #vasisthasana. Such an imbalance can cause pain and discomfort.
Best done with a teacher until you get a handle on it.

I 💗 teaching beginners.
This was his second class with me and second yoga class ever. EVERYTHING is new to him 😄 He's also managed to improve in the space of 1 week. How do I know? .

Last week when I asked him how he felt after class, he shrugged: "I don't know." This time during a few poses, I asked him more specific questions (Does your pelvis feel balanced on the ground? Do you feel pain in your lower back? Etc) He paused to think before answering each of my questions. .

At the end of class, I asked how he felt. "I feel good," he replied with a small smile. So I was pleased that he was able to increase his awareness of his body / mind in practice -- whether he said bad or good isn't really the point. In other circumstances, the teacher asking questions in asana may distract other student/s. I don't do this for everyone all the time. But for this student, it helped train his mind to re-establish the lost connection with his body. .

Living in our modern world makes us detached from our bodies*. We only notice when it's too late (sickness, disease, injury). The practice of yoga can be a good antidote to the strain of inhabiting a body in this world.
And that's why I continue to teach yoga 💗💗💗

*Ironically, at the other extreme are yogis who become obsessed with their bodies / asana practice. Every class is a chance to show off their strength / flexibility. Eating disorders are rampant when everyone is in skin-tight clothing and confronting their reflections in mirrored studios. It doesn't help when many teachers ourselves are fat-phobic and fat-shame students. .

We can love our bodies without being obsessed with them 🖤

Okay, let me just say that the pretentious face I’m making in the first photo was definitely not intentional... 🙈 I was just trying to lift my chest and square my shoulders! 🤷🏻‍♀️ .
Anyway. I feel like I’m fighting a bug, and I spent the majority of the day in bed and just lazing around the house. (It was awesome.) But, I find it really difficult to not do some asana practice or stretching every day, even if I’m not feeling well - it pretty much always feels like my body needs it.
I average about 3 hours of asana practice/teaching, 6 day’s a week, and that’s been my general schedule for a year or so. Flexibility comes so much more naturally to me than strength, so my focus in my own practice has been on building more strength (in order to find more balance for greater stability and longevity) for some time. But I tend to just work on flexibility when I’m not feeling 100% or if I need a bit of a break from my strength practice. I decided to add another block to my over-splits practice today, and it felt intense, but still comfortable - in this particular practice, my goal is to explore my depth as much as possible, without pushing past pain.💜
I love static stretching - in yoga terms, Hatha or Yin - because I find those longer holds really help to improve body awareness and breath integration. There’s always so much work to be done - in yoga, in life, in everything - but what I love about flexibility practice is that it asks you instead to let go and release, if you want to move forward. 😌🙏🏻
