Day 18: Tiptoe Chair Pose-Utkatasana Padangustasana.

Beginning in Mountain Pose, take hands to heart center, & slowly squat down into Chair Pose. Extend hands overhead. Keeping legs & feet activated & pressed firmly together, slowly rise up onto your tip toes. Hold steadily, & breathe.
Build-up poses: Mountain Pose, Chair Pose, Tiptoe Squat Pose

Counter poses: Seated Forward Fold, Mountain Pose
Lighten/Modify:

a) Practice with the heels only slightly off the floor. Gradually work your way up to as farthest away from the floor as they'll go.
b) Place a rolled up blanket under the heels.
c) Practice with the bottom against the wall for balance support.
d) Keep hands at heart center for a modified version.

“It’s surprising how much of memory is built around things unnoticed at the time.
BARBARA KINGSOLVER” “The clarity of our heart-mind determines how accurately an experience is stored in our memory. Whatever we think we saw or heard is what gets stored in our memory. Correct perception (pramāṇa) means the stored memories are truthful, while misperception (viparyaya) leads to untruthful memories. Clarification and purification of our heart-mind (citta-prasādana) is essential for seeing the world as it actually is.
The process of yoga includes the gradual replacement of harmful or negative memories with helpful or positive ones. Whatever receives attention will strengthen, and whatever we pay no attention to will weaken. As we pay less attention to detrimental habits and give more attention to those that are beneficial, eventually the former are superseded by the latter. This process reprograms the heart-mind and moves us toward happiness and optimism.” Excerpt From

“KARMA IS A POPULAR WORD with many connotations. Karma means action or activity that produces a result and leaves behind an energetic impression inside our heart-mind. Karma can originate from us as a thought, word, or deed, or it can be something we perceive with our senses, such as a movie we watch or song that we hear. Every karma has consequences, which may occur sooner or later and may be obvious “or subtle. Karma is recorded in our memory and, it is said, in the memory bank of the universe.
On a cosmic level, Isaac Newton’s third law of motion states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” The cause of an action contains its effects in subtle form. The universe is a continuous dance of energy. If we want to contribute the energy of kindness and compassion to the universe, we must act that way. Positive energy begets positive energy, and vice versa. For example, have you noticed how you feel around someone who is kind, generous, and happy? Does it make you feel more that way? On the other hand, when you are in the company of a negative, mean, pessimistic person, how do you feel? Day 17: Reclined Hero Pose-Supta Virasana.

Warm up with reclining half hero first (1 leg extended along floor). Make sure to squeeze knees together, keep as much spine in contact with the floor as possible, keep chin tucked in towards chest, & back of neck long.

Build-up poses: Hero Pose, Supported Bridge Pose, Camel Posture, Frog Pose.

Counter poses: Child Pose & Extended Child Pose, Double Leg Forward Stretch, Head Beyond the Knee Pose
Lighten/Modify:
a) Widen the knees apart.
b) Lie part way back.
c) Lie back on a bolster or folded blankets instead of flat on the ground.

I have been trying for YEARS, to make it a personal goal of mine, to be able to grab that leg with the revolved arm, AND reach that foot back farther, & I finally DID!!! And holy moley, what a deep, awesome stretch for my spine it was!

Day 16: Seated Spinal Twist in Half Lotus-Ardha Padme Matsyendrasana.

The traditional way to di this asana: Begin seated on your mat with your legs extended in front of you. Bend you left knee and place your left heel as close to your right sit-bone as you can. Then bend your right knee and cross your right foot over your left knee. Plant it on the floor so your right ankle is next to your left knee.
Reach your right arm behind you and place your palm on the floor. Then bend your left elbow and cross it over the outer side of your right knee. Keep your elbow bent, or if you can, hold onto your right toes. Keep your right hand on the floor for stability, or bring your right arm around your lower back. Reach for your shirt, or if you can, hook your fingers on the top of your left thigh. Gaze behind you and over your right shoulder.
Continue pressing your left arm into your right knee, and use each inhale to lengthen the spine and each exhale to rotate further to the right. Stay here for five or more breaths. Then release the twist, straighten your legs out in front of you, and do this pose on the opposite side.

Build up poses: Revolved Easy Pose, Cow Face Forward Fold

Counter poses: Twist the other way

Lighten/Modify:

a) Don't twist as deeply. Only go as far as you are comfortable.
b) Don't twist in the opposite direction. Twist the same way that your upright knee is going-Revolved.

Quick note, you are not supposed to be up on your back toes in this Asana. Your back foot is supposed to be flat, & pointed slightly inward, like for Warrior poses. I just couldn't do that in these shoes. 😜😜😜 Also, this is my 2nd favorite stretch to do before & after I run. ❤

Day 15: Revolved Side Angle Stretch-Parivrtta Parsvakonasana.

Build up poses: Revolved Triangle Pose, Revolved Half Moon Pose, Lunges

Counter poses: Wide Leg Forward Bend, Downward Facing Dog Pose

Lighten/Modify:

a) Don't raise back knee off the ground +/or don't raise arm overhead.
b) Instead of one hand overhead & one flat on ground, stay in the twist, but take hands to heart center.
c) Place hand on floor inside the foot, rather than outside the foot.

“WE ARE ALL CONDITIONED BY our experience. Whenever we see, hear, taste, smell, touch, feel, think, speak, or act, our heart and mind are affected. It is our heart-mind field that accepts sensory input from outside, processes it, integrates it into ourselves, and remembers, ruminates, and directs the delivery of thoughts, words, and actions. The heart-“mind stores our experiences, including emotions, in memory, and over time uses this information to construct an identity that defines who we think we are. Citta is our heart-mind, our outer and inner psyche, and the primary place of interest in the Yoga Sūtras. Our heart-mind sits between the ever-changing outside world and an inner light of awareness. This inner light never changes, and it represents pure, unconditional love. A heart-mind sullied with mental-emotional baggage prevents the inner light from shining through, causing us to act or react according to our deep habitual patterns of behavior. As the heart-mind is clarified, more light can shine through it, and our actions become more loving and positive toward others and ourselves. This week’s Yogi Assignment is Sukha, the Sanskrit word for Ease. If you’re stressing out about the small details and worrying about how everything is going to work out you may miss the simple beauty that surrounds you. If you’re able to shift your mind to ease and flow, then you’ll walk through even the most difficult moments of your life with grace. Take the lesson of Sukha into the hardest poses of your practice. Ask yourself how you can find a space of peace even amidst great challenge. Whether that means accepting that your hips aren’t open yet and learning to love them anyway, or it means softening your practice instead of pushing too hard, move yourself into ease and flow.
Self-soothing is a skill that is often hard to learn. When life feels overwhelming you need tools to calm your nervous system. Whether it’s getting a massage, sprinkling a bit of lavender oil, going for a walk, practicing yoga or spending time in prayer, finding moments of ease and flow in your life gives you an emotional safe space to heal. A student asked if I could demonstrate how to be effortless in transitions and postures. I was initially a little shook by the question, I wasn't sure if I should pull out a mat and show some tricks, or if to remain quiet until I found an answer to give. Fear took over me because I'm not a 'pull out your yoga tricks' person, I don't have any. What I have is focus. So I replied that he should finish his practice first and we will talk later. As I watched I thought to myself what is it that makes my own practice feel either light and effortless or eternal and heavy?
The truth is that it's nothing that comes from the practitioner, it's not an acquired skill, rather it's a quality that the practitioner cultivates through practice . It's what happens when all the key elements of practice (breath in coordination with movement, soft focused gaze, bandhas) are established. When these are in place the practitioner becomes a vehicle for union to happen. When there is union the body becomes one with the breath, the limbs move in coordination because they are orchestrated from within. The mind is present on the inhale and the exhale. There is a merging that happens that makes one stand in ease.
At the end of his practice I walked up and said I didn't have any tricks or secrets and if I tried to demonstrate in that moment he would not see what he saw yesterday while I was on the mat. I told him in the hopes this would help him that The ease comes from the focus I'm able to generate through practice.
When questions arise the answer is usually always to go back to basics, to the foundation! That is the amazing thing about this practice. It's simple, it's for everyone to be able to understand and do. Don't be fooled by the exterior look of it, work internally and the necessary transformations will automatically happen! -
