Another view of the 2017 Jim Vlock First Year Building Project by Zelig Fok and Haylie Chan. Light enters through a “cowl” on the second floor of the two-bedroom unit.

Students of the @yalearchitecture unveiled the latest Jim Vlock First Year Building Project: a two-family house in New Haven. It features two units separated by a walkway, but under the same irregularly slopping roof. Much its parts — including dormers, window frames, stairs, and cabinetry — were prefabricated on campus, shortening time needed for construction on site. Photo by Zelig Fok and Haylie Chan.

In a day filled with heartbreak and tragedy, the Open House at the First Year Building Project was even more meaningful. Students at the Yale School of Architecture designed and built the home, which will house those who were homeless in two units.
The home is the 50th annual project at the school and the first of five to be built in partnership with Columbus House and its Homeless: Housed program.
It was heartwarming to see good being done for those in need. Thank you to those who invited me to the event via Instagram.
The Yale School of Architecture was founded in 1916 as part of the School of Fine Arts. Many of its students have gone on to illustrious careers after graduation, or even before. In 1981, Maya Lin's design for the Vietnam Memorial was selected in a blinded completion from over 1,400 entries. At the time, Lin was a 21-year-old undergraduate at the school.
Eero Saarinen was a 1934 graduate of the school who won a 1948 contest for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, which became known as she Gateway Arch in St. Louis. He also designed the TWA terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport and Ingalls Rink here in New Haven, which is known as 'The Whale.' He is also remembered for his furniture designs, which included the Womb and Tulip or Pedestal chairs.
Norman Foster received his master's from the school in the 1960s and went on to an award-winning career in architecture. His iconic designs have included the newer Wembley Stadium and 30 St Mary Ave in London, the Swiss Re headquarters known to locals as "The Gherkin" for its pickle shape. Foster also worked on the restoration of the Reichstag in Berlin and designed the large glass dome there. With input from Steve Jobs, Foster designed Apple Park, the company's headquarters in Cupertino, CA, which opened in April of this year.
