When the sun's out and the wind's smooth, nothing beats having a nap under the shade of a great big tree. Accompanied by music of preference, it is so rejuvenating. Let me just forget the rest of the world for a sec.

In this season of my life, I’m pursuing vulnerability and honesty. ⠀

Day by day, I’m learning how shame has woven its way into my story, my life, my family, my marriage, but ... if I have anything to say about it, not my future. ⠀

I’m currently reading the book Soul of Shame by Curt Thompson and would recommend it to anyone who struggles with shame and the power it can hold over us as we pursue vulnerability. ⠀

I was inspired by Thompson today in his book when I read this:⠀

“The more of me that is exposed to another, the greater will be my wounding when I am betrayed. We deeply long for connection, to be seen and known for who we are without rejection. But we are terrified of the vulnerability that is required for that very contact. And SHAME is the variable that mediates that fear of rejection in the face of vulnerability.” ⠀

I believe that it is once I understand the way shame works that I can start to overcome its hold over me.⠀

If anyone else out there is struggling with shame. You aren’t alone. ⠀

Of course cake makes me happy but when it's Harry Potter cake it's even better!
(A girl from my husband's office made this, I can see why she's applied for Great British Bake Off!) #tghappythought

A bit about us ☺️ ⠀

We’re not sure how exactly we met ... and we always say it's such a bummer 🤷🏼‍♀️ It was sometime during our undergrad at The University of Wisconsin-Madison. I remember Caleb coming over to our apartment to study chem with my roommate (and always thinking how darn cute he was!), while Caleb remembers a night ice skating with a group of friends as the first time he really noticed me.⠀

We bonded over a mutual love of music, water sports, photography, and our shared faith.⠀

Though good friends for two years in college, we didn't actually start dating until after college! We went on a snowboarding trip with some friends and after the trip, Caleb started texting me more than he ever had before and so one day I finally just asked him, “Do you have feelings for me or what?” I just had to know why we were all of a sudden talking so much 🤪 Because we were living in different cities at the time, we ended up Skyping the next day and Caleb told me that he did have feelings for me as more than a friend and that he would like to pursue them if I was interested. How could I resist? 😍⠀

For the next couple of months, we spent hours talking on the phone, Skyping, and went on several dates. Cheers to long distance! After asking my dad for permission to intentionally date me, we became “official” and were both over the moon 🤩 We spent the following summer shooting weddings, getting to know one another better, and taking lots of late night boat rides. I couldn’t have asked for a better beginning to our story 💖
Then, I moved to Turkey. I was there for a year doing mission work and our relationship was tested in a SUPER hard but ultimately beautiful way. It was during this time (when we were mega far apart and experiencing intense life changes) that we both knew we were willing to fight and do whatever it took to be together.⠀

Once I returned, we dated for a few more months before finally getting engaged at the top of that same ski hill where it all began! Nine months later, we were married at my aunt and uncle’s house on the most magical, life-changing day ❤️⠀

I would LOVE to know, even just briefly, how did you meet your significant other?!

Have seen most of the lovely ladies and (now) toddlers from our antenatal classes recently. My expectations when deciding to do classes were, I might gain some people I could hang out with while on mat leave. The reality was we all bonded really well and quickly became a great support for each other. Even now they would be people I know I could turn to for honest, non judgemental advice; which isn't always easy to find when it comes to parenting! It's also so lovely to see our babies all growing into (very!) independent little people and hope they (and of course us parents) will all still be friends in years to come.
