The first steam engine in America was the
Stourbridge Lion.
Named for the town in which it was manufactured by Foster,Rastrick & Co.
It had the face of a lion painted on the front. Purchased by the Delaware & Hudson Co., It was shipped to N.Y.
May 1829.
It was tested on raised wooden blocks & shipped to Honesdale,PA. for testing on newly built track.
1st test Aug. 1829: pass
Successive testing fails & the locomotive
is never used for it's intended purpose of
hauling coal wagons.
The beast is just too heavy for the rails!
It's stripped of parts & converted to a stationery engine for a cable railway.
These first gen. engines where too unreliable to make it over the
Allegheny mountains.
