My dog @zorrito_burrito wanted to be a K9, but I didn’t want him to give up on his full time gig as my professional cuddler. So I got him a matching bow tie instead.

Some days I am fine. Some days it feels impossible to roll out of bed. Other days are a roller coaster of highs and lows and I’m not sure whether I’d rather hold on or jump off the ride altogether.
Some days my biggest accomplishment is making my bed.
A couple of years ago, I heard Admiral Mcraven’s speech on leadership, success, and motivation. I enjoyed it, and loved his words about overcoming life’s challenges. After watching the speech, however, it slipped into the recesses of my mind and I didn’t think about Admiral Mcraven’s words for a long while.
Until I was at the end of my rope and stuck in a fog of depression that I’m still not sure how to navigate my way out of. A friend shared the video of Admiral Mcraven’s speech on Facebook, and this time it left me in tears. I read the Admiral‘s book, “Make Your Bed,” and it helped me focus on setting small goals every day to keep fighting and progressing forward.
One month ago, I made a vow to make my bed every day. Because then, even while struggling with depression and grief, it still means I got out of bed and accomplished something. New crisp sheets, pillows, a homemade blanket lovingly crafted by Andrew’s mom, and a freshly fluffed duvet help me proud of making my bed and feel more relaxed when I crawl in after a long day. Zorro seems to enjoy the coziness, too.
Some days my biggest accomplishment is making my bed. But that means that I woke up. That means I’m still moving forward. That means I’m still here. And I’m goddamn proud that I’m still setting goals and accomplishing them.
