So happy to see Wonders of Life trending again. Can we start the totally false rumour that they're restoring it to its 1989 condition? Here a 90s style placemat I made of the pavilion a few years ago 😊

This building in Lamu, Kenya, is the model for one of the buildings in Harambe at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. If you know the park, you will know this building. It’s right behind the performance platform in the middle of town. We try not to copy buildings...Instead, we study them to figure out the rules that make them go together and look the way they look… This study includes architectural style and proportion, of course… But also we look at erosion, and modification, and the ways in which the building begins to age…Then we design a building from the ground up… So our building is not exactly like this, but this is the building we try to use as a model to learn from. This photograph is probably from 1991… Who knows if this building is even still there. We chose Swahili architecture because it is indigenous and not colonial. Some people claim that it is just imported Arabic architecture, but that does not seem to be true. It seems to be more like a voluntary adaptation by local people of a combination of styles, some local, some imported from India, and some from Arabia.
