The Skidbladner is a full size replica of the Gokstad ship found in a Viking burial mount in Norway. Visit her and the reconstructed longhouse when you visit Unst, the most northerly isle in the U.K. #followthevikings #vikings #vikingship #visitscotland

I haven’t shared any photos of me yet so thought I’d use #throwbackthursday to put up a photo from our family adventure this summer, travelling from Cornwall to the staggeringly beautiful, most northerly island in the U.K., Unst. The whole family fell in love with Shetland and we are planning to go back.
This is me, a mum of two that should know better, skateboarding in my wellies. I really love skateboarding but am not really that good and only really do it where nobody can see me.
Anyway, that’s enough about me - what hobbies are you all passionate about? Hope you are all having a great day, can almost smell the weekend from here!

The most northerly inhabited island in the UK is not a bad place to be when the northern lights decide to dance. Shot facing west to capture both the Milky Way and aurora in the same shot.

Northern gannet close up - This image was captured whilst working #onassignment for @natgeo at Hermaness National Nature Reserve on the northernmost tip of the Shetland Islands. I had decided to focus on trying to capture some of the more elegant details of these striking birds, illustrating some of their rarely displayed moments of calm. When using backlighting there is always a much greater degree of latitude that one can use regarding exposure, freeing the photographer to interpret the scene how he/she chooses, as opposed to front lighting where the exposure is generally either correct or not. I decided, usually after reviewing how the images were working out, to sacrifice a small amount of detail on the fringes of the birds' plumage in order to reveal critical detail in its face. I face a similar predicament when I’m photographing my badgers using backlighting and over time my preference has leaned towards giving them more light on their faces by using a slower shutter speed/higher exposure compensation. This of course has the same consequence, that is loss of detail in the extreme highlights but this is the only way to increase the illumination, and detail in the face. It was then simply a case of waiting and hoping for the right moment to photograph the preening bird. I had always previously overlooked this image until it was chosen from among countless others as the opening image in my 9th BBC Wildlife feature, published just a few months after the story was published in @natgeo. Andy found himself at Hermaness on his visit to Unst as he was on assignment for @natgeo - "Arguably the most spectacular location for wildlife photography in the U.K."
