Spring in Fjord Norway is a special time. Both nature and people wake up from their long winter slumber. The days grow longer, the sun's warmth can be felt again, and the first crocuses and daffodils spring forth.

The four seasons of the Norwegian fjords do not only have a bearing on nature, but also on the people who live here. Over time, the seasons have moulded the culture and the way of life in the region.

Autumn in Fjord Norway is beautiful and a little wistful. As the nights grow darker, we are less likely to be found outdoors. Many of the attractions are still open for people who choose to visit the region in autumn, but there are fewer tourists around.

Wondering when to visit the Norwegian fjords?
Most visitors come to Fjord Norway during the summer (read: crowded), but the greatest wonders are reserved for those who come in the quieter seasons. During wintertime the great mountain-terrain turns Fjord Norway into a paradise for skiers and those seeking the serenity of snow covered winter landscapes.

If you're not living your life on your own terms, then whose terms *are* you living it on!? Carrie and I hiked up to Preikestolen in the evening so that we could camp by the famous ledge and catch the pastel sunrise in the wee morning hours. We were certainly rewarded for our efforts! .

#Repost from @justine_gosling with @regram.app ... "I was rapidly gaining speed on my skis and losing control, I knew that it was only a matter of seconds before I was going to kiss the snow. My pulk, a plastic sledge weighting nearly as much as me carrying all my food, camping gear and clothes for 12 days was riding along side me down the mountain waiting for its moment to strike. Bam! It cut across in front of me taking out my feet, throwing me to the ground in a haze of white before rolling multiple times, dragging me head first, face in the snow, down the mountain until my spaying arms and legs eventually slowed us down to a stop.

I pushed myself up onto my hands and lifted my burning, snow scratched face out of the white cold ground. I could see the contents of my pulk, freeze dried meals, tent poles and ropes messily disgorged in every direction around me. One of my supportive Norwegian guides, Hans-Petti had seen my dramatic fall and had raced up to check if I was ok. I looked up as he approached for sympathetic words. “Cookie?” he smiled broadly through his long, sun bleached beard and held a spilt packet of snow covered cookies to me that he had picked up out of the snow a few meters away. At a moment I could have easily burst into tears that simple gesture made us burst into laughter. We ate a cold cookie each which contained more snow than biscuit and began gathering the contents of my pulk from all around us and continued on.

My pulk and I never became friends. It was heavy to pull up the hills and did whatever it wanted when going down hill. I frequently cursed it and found myself speaking to it as if it was an unruly child, “Don’t do that!” I’d scream at it, “Behave!” I’d command, “Stop!” I’d beg. It never listened. It was however, good for sitting on during lunch breaks". #Svalbard #visitnorway #visitnorwaynow #expedition #basecampduffel

There's nothing like sailing alongside 1,700-metre tall mountains to make you feel small. Have you experienced the grandeur of the Norwegian fjords yet?

Yesterday, we had our first snow! It may be a little early in the year but seeing the white flurries has me pondering about winter travel. Norway is one of my favorite winter locations. Where do you like to go in the winter months?❄️

This arm of the "King of the Fjords" has been called "the world's number one natural heritage site". The Nærøyfjord in Norway sure has a lot of bragging rights!

Dreaming of an island getaway this winter? While the Lofoten Islands of Northern Norway aren't ideal for sunbathing, the gorgeous mountain views and northern lights opportunities more than make up for it.
