Robert Burns 1769-1796. Haggis eater and Scottish Poet. He is considered the national poet of Scottland and he is celebrated annually with haggis, whiskey, and poetry on Burns Night, January 25.

A line from his poem "To a Mouse" inspired the title of Steinback's novel "Of Mice and Men". Bob Dylan cited one of Burns' works as the source of his greatest inspiration. Salinger used a character's misinterpretation of a Burns' poem as the foundation to his novel "Catcher in the Rye". He wrote "Auld Lang Syne" a poem set to music that is sung worldwide to bid farewell. ***
'Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!
Chorus - For auld land syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.' ***

The catcher in the Rye를 읽었다.

{“Something else an academic education will do for you. If you go along with it any considerable distance, it’ll begin to give you an idea what size mind you have. What it’ll fit and, maybe, what it won’t. After a while, you’ll have an idea what kind of thoughts your particular size mind should be wearing. For one thing, it may save you an extraordinary amount of time trying on ideas that don’t suit you. You’ll begin to know your true measurements and dress your mind accordingly.”}
I won’t share all my thoughts about this novel with you because, after all, what else could possibly be said that hasn’t been said before countless times? Thinking of this book as a whole overwhelms and exhausts me. I suppose in a big way it breaks my heart to think of how strongly I wish Holden’s dream career could exist in the real world, that one could be saved from the loss of innocence and the unfairness of living through the greatest part of your life without being able to appreciate it. I know every other person in the world struggles with this exact same thought process, but it burns me up, in a way, that we all are cognizant of this huge human tragedy every child is headed towards yet we can’t figure out a way to lessen the blow. Is THAT what Holden sees as “phony” all along? The great cosmic punchline that adulthood is so grand you should rush through your childhood as fast as you can, only to make it to the other side and realize how foolish you were not to treasure your innocence?

#followme #thecatcherintherye

My 2018 reread list. I loved all of these books except Catcher in the Rye, so I want to reread it to see if my opinion will change.

I've finished The Help yesterday and am now so thrilled to watch the movie! Which one did you like more if you both read and watch it?
