A drought in 1970s Southern California has an unexpected side effect: as people empty their swimming pools, a group of teen surfers from the Dogtown area of Venice Beach move in with skateboards, and a new sport is born. Based on a true story, this film follows "Z-Boys" skate team members Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch), plus manager Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger), as their fearless "pool surfing" leads to fame, fortune -- and misfortune

" Skateboard Madness "
Directed by Julian Pena 1980
When a reporter too laid-back for his own good is told his last chance to keep his job is to get some good photos for a story on skateboarding, he seeks out a group of four boarders who agree to take him on a skateboarding tour of California. After showing extensive footage of skateboarding moves and tricks, the film then goes on to show some surfing and snowboarding. The film is also bookended by a pair of animated shorts, both about skateboard racing.

#tbt one foot tabletop on my beloved #jmcracing machine. circa ‘84 at my friend Duane’s “vert ramp” it had maybe a inch of vert and was only 8ft tall, but that was pretty standard for a #vertramp back in the day. #staceyperalta once said something like, “give it everything you’ve got to give now, cuz when it’s over you’ll look back, I promise”
Had a rad time at the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum today. So amazing to see all the Dogtown stuff in person. Thanks for the hospitality! 🙌🏻🏄🐶 #skateboarding #dogtown #jayadams #tonyalva #staceyperalta #zephyrteam #ca #cahistory #sevenadams

Man, there's a documentary about the anniversary of this movie that actually brought a tear to my eye...So sick that they recreated the wicked ramp from the final scene!
And so fucked that Search for Animal Chin is 30 years old this year...that shit changed boarding movies forever. Funny - as a kid I would refer to the movie as "the 3ft. High and Rising" of skate movies for introducing an overarching narrative element to a genre which, until then, had been just a pile of edited footage of tricks - much like the way in which Prince Paul convinced De La Soul to add a host of skits to their first album, turning "skit tracks" into a hip-hop album staple. As it turns out, I had it backwards. 3ft. High is the Animal Chin of hip-hop albums; Paul and Plugs 1-3 wouldn't turn in their studio cut to Tommy Boy until '88, a year after Animal Chin was introduced into the VHS-swapping skate movie community.
