Ranks, Medals, Markings, IDs
The French ranking structure retains many of the titles previously discussed in this on going series, but deviates from Western convention of the chevron for at enlisted ranks.

The French structure, while unusual to those accustomed to the US structure, is perhaps the most simplistic of Western militaries to understand. All ranks until those of general staff rank are defined by lines. At the general rank, star clusters are used.

For enlisted soldiers, ranks are displayed diagonally, with counts up to three in various colors to signal rank and grade of rank. Upon reaching officer grade, the ranks restart, this time horizontal on the sleeve instead of diagonal. Rather than capping at three stripes, this continues to five, at Colonel. Gold and Silver are used to depict grade and separate Colonel from Lieutenant Colonel.

Generals begin with two stars, increase to three, four, five, and the General of the Army receives a full constellation.

The kepi is equally useful to identify rank. Corporals and privates have a blue kepi with a red stripe. Sergeants of all grades add a gold stripe along the brim. Officers gain their sleeve rank repeated on the kepi. Finally, generals bear an increasingly more intricate oak leaf cluster covering the entire kepi.

On the kepi will also be found a number, indicating one's unit, and an emblem, indicating one's service.

Sgt. La David Johnson
Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright
Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson and their families
Gentlemen, hero’s, patriots, family and loved ones,

I am a humble US citizen. I don’t have the “voice” that you deserve, but I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge all of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your impeccable service. Thank you for making me and my loved ones feel safe. All the privileges I enjoy trickle down to me because of you. Your service and ultimate sacrifice cannot be measured in words. But what I can do, is remember you, and praise you every chance I get. Sgt. Bryan Black, bless you! Sgt. La David Johnson bless you! Sgt. Dustin Wright, bless you! Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, bless you! Your names are etched in my memory and you will never be forgotten.
And to their families, I send all of you my deepest and heartfelt condolences. How difficult this must be for all of you. I would belittle your pain by saying I understand. In times like these, often our faith holds us together. I pray for you all, and though your sadness will never leave your side, I hope that you can hold-on to at least one thing. Your sons, and brothers and loved ones are heroes, and no one will ever take that away from you.
Love, blessings and peace.
A humble US citizen
