Today, I am The Salamander. The Salamander mixed green tea latte with peppermint. It was a bad idea. But The Salamander will drink it anyway. #starbucks #peppermintgreentealatte #gross #soiconvent #bangkok #thailand

This is the dish I crave the most when back home in Melbourne Kha Moo. A northern braised pork hock dish, and yes all that fat on there is an essential part of the taste, just break it up with the rest of the meat. I always add the tangy, thin chilli garlic vinegar sauce they have and nowadays eat it like most Thais popping small whole cloves of garlic into my mouth and whole tiny chilli's to go along with it. When I first saw these condiments on a table I couldn't imagine eating them just like that, but discovered they really enhance the taste a lot, this dish in its raw state is totally non spicy so up to you if you add the chilli garlic sauce (quite mild) or chew on garlic and spicy little chilli's while eating.

They always serve the dish with a halved boiled egg Cooked in the liquid, but im not so keen on hard boiled egg so give it a miss. This place also add a Shitake mushroom which is a nice touch as it soaks up a lot of flavour and can be a bit salty which adds a nice balance to the dish I think.

There are two places I like, one on soi convent left hand side when going from Silom. Opens about three or four pm. The other one that does it well is down in Soi 20 off Silom road about a third of the way along on the right, they sell mango sticky rice too a match made in heaven. SOI 20 is a must visit if you want to check out good Bangkok food, especially in the mornings 6.30-9 when the street market is in full force. But good anytime.

Mango Sticky Rice, served on coconut rice, topped with roasted rice and then a delicious slightly salty coconut sauce poured over. The best known Thai dessert and still my favourite, I often stop off to get some on my way home from a night out when in Bangkok.

Costs 50b-100b depending on how much, a large one would be an entire meal or to be shared you can find this anywhere, some better places slice the mango fresh, others pre prepare a little, but I have never had a bad one so don't be too fussed where you get it. Once again this was from Soi Convent on right hand side coming from Silom. Open till well after midnight from early in the day.

If you are in Sukhumvit Rd There are a couple of excellent places around Thonglor station as well. One in the little food area in a SOI near station on right if coming from Siam and the other one on opposite side of road in from the corner in a fruit shop which must go through hundreds if not thousands In a day as it is so famous...easy to find them just do a search on Google for Thonglor mango sticky rice and both should turn up.

Larb Gai, one of my favourite Thai dishes from the Isaan region, but easy to find everywhere, sometimes chunks of chicken sometimes minced..they do pork and duck versions too. Tangy and spicy with a little crunch from roasted rice, such a good dish.

Unfortunately the northern pork (Kha Moo) stall I love in Soi Convent wasn't open yet, but that means I got to try this amazing chicken Khao Mok Gai (Thai Biryani style) amazed at how tender the chicken was, cost me 60b with two pieces of chicken and I went to the local 7/11 to get the beer 60b (total about $5). I love how in Thailand you can just grab a single beer then drink it on street with your food although I notice no sales permitted from 2-5pm now at the convenience stores.

I always try to stay around the Silom area as I find it has some of the best street food around everywhere but especially down SOI Convent and lots of cheap cafes although I mostly eat street food costs half what cafes charge and often better quality as street food vendors are specialists in only one dish. Plus Silom is handy to BTS (only a few stops from.Siam or Victory Monument) and good local areas like Bangrak or boat to China town from Saphan Taksin station Plus Silom has lots of bars, nightclubs, girlie bars, gay clubs and gogo bars if that's your thing.
Sukhumvit is ok, but tends to be more Up market and higher priced and cafe focused, Thonglor area is awesome for street food though and of course Em Quartier at Phrom Phong is an amazing complex with some top level eateries well worth checking out... A lot depends on what you are looking for I quite like the seedier night life areas of Silom and being able to get good food easily after midnight, not really into Patong market/bars which is a bit of a tourist trap but if you want eye openers there is plenty to see around here.
