The Balvenie DoubleWood Aged 12 Years

Oh my, oh my, oh my... this is my first whisky that after nosing my wife asked for me to pour her a wee glass — this is special as she is alcohol intolerant (she turns cherry red and her body gets amazingly hot - not that she isn’t always hot - anyways, has to be special for her to want a wee dram). This was also my first dram and indeed it was delicious AF — no tasting notes necessary. If you haven’t got a bottle, get one as it’s a smashing entry-level to this distillery.

I’ve seen quite a few Balvenie posts here on IG and decided it was time to give this distillery a go. Yeah, I know, I’m old AF to never have had Balvenie. I asked a few fellowship of the dram buddies about Balvenie, and it was a unanimous decision that I must get a bottle ASAP. Opinions varied on which bottle to start with, but the majority opinion was to start with this one that my wife now loves... with plenty of empty glasses waiting to be filled with Balvenie whenever fellowship buddies come visit. The question now is which Balvenie to dram next.

I got The Balvenie single malt scotch whiskey aged 15 years for the hubby on our 15 year anniversary(2 years go). He loved it, highly recommend. It's a pricey one but it was a reward for dealing with my shenanigans 🤣

A little sample today of the #TeelingRevival IV 15yo #MuscatCask, 46%. Colour: Pale yellow-gold. Nose: Sweet, floral, pear, honey, cream, melted butter, lemon citrus. Palate: Rather grapey! Oily mouthfeel. Like a malty dessert wine. Sugar candy, toffee apple, honeycomb. Finish: Medium, candied grapefruit, white pepper, lychee. Very nice as an after-dinner digestif. Yum!

Fukano Japanese Whisky Tasting! •
This taste was a real pleasure. It was hands down one of the best tastings I’ve ever been to. A big part of that reason was that the distillery’s President Seiichi Fukano came out from Japan to be there. •
Fukano Distillery has been around since 1823, and Seiichi is a 7th generation master distiller. •
We had 4 tastings: Fukano 2017, Fukano 2018, Fukano 12, and Fukano Sherry Cask. What makes this really unique is that the whisky is made from rice instead of the traditional grains I am used to. It was amazing to taste them all side by side because one could really appreciate the subtle differences of each. All four whiskies are the same recipes, but aged in different barrels and different orders. •
One quote I heard that night that was very poignant was that, “Making whisky is basically making a cocktail except with barrels instead of shakers.” So on to the whisky:

Fukano 2017 Edition:

This was in Whiskey Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2017 (the only Japanese whisky to make the list). There were 4,411 bottles made. It was aged in 5 oak casks, then 3 sherry wine casks. This was a very subtle whisky with Creme brûlée and red fruits on the front end with an umami finish. •

Fukano 2018 Edition:

This whisky hasn’t even been released yet. It was brought over from Japan just for the tasting. Seiichi reversed the barrel order from the 2017 so it was 3 sherry wine casks then 5 oak casks. As a result, the flavor order is very similar to the 2017 but reversed! The nose on this also popped a lot more than the previous year’s make. •
Fukano 12 Year Old Single Cask:

This was a beautiful expression aged in new European oak. The oak gives it that amazing coconut nose. This was the most traditional whisky of the batch. It was created to be drunk while eating something heavier like oily fish so it has a strong flavor. I loved it!! •
Fukano Sherry Cask:

Aged in ex-oloroso sherry casks, this whisky was an homage to the old school sherry whiskys of the 1960s. It was very heavily sherried and had a hint of sulfur. This was cask strength and actually made my tongue tingle even though it was about 40%ish ABV. It was absolutely delicious.
Fun fact: Hudson Whiskey was the first whiskey distillery in New York state since Prohibition. Try their Baby Bourbon, Manhattan Rye, and Maple Cask Rye tonight from 5-8pm. #mondowhiskey
