#Adhomukhasvanasan aka #DownwardFacingDog
I place much emphasis on this #yogapose in the classes that I teach. Despite being a basic fundamental pose that we always come back to, many don't spend time working on it.
Perhaps cos this is not a yoga pose where the improvements are obvious. Cos the aim is to have your back & legs straight with your hips high up to the ceiling, not your heels on the mat. So that you feel a yummy #stretch along your arms to your back and down your hamstrings.
Scroll to see a comparison of my progress in this #inversion.
September 2016: Only 1-month of yoga & mainly self-practice at home. I knew my #downwarddog wasn't all that.
February 2018: I'm still surprised at the vast difference as I sometimes still have trouble placing my heels flat on the mat.
As we always say in yoga,
"Practice, and all is coming." 🙏🏼

Day 7• #FromMyMatToYours
*Seated wide legged forward fold
Any kind of splits doesn’t come easy for me. It takes many minutes or probably even hours for me to get warmed up to get into the pose. Getting into it too fast, or forcing myself into the pose will result in a muscle pull that will last for many many months, and I mean more than half a year. So I get really cautious here! The video I took was first half of the warmups. I usually start with a little hip opener like butterfly pose, then work on one side and then the other, then both, rest, then work on it again:) Pancake seems far away, but I’ll get there. I will🤸🏻‍♀️

🚩Most people are content to be unfocused weekend warriors when it comes to martial arts practice 🦖. How can we expect to achieve powerful and transformative results by doing this “part-time” 🏹 ? With Jeet Kune Do, we either go ALL IN and unify our expression or don’t touch it 🤺. Unification, congruence and personal mastery is the goal 🥅 — JKD is merely the vessel🐲.

Not forgetting to #stopdropyoga in between CNY feasting!
It’s okay to feast once in a while, just be sure to incorporate exercising at least 3-4x per week?
Maintain a healthy balance eating lifestyle ☺️💪🏾😋
For me, I used to do yoga 5-6x a week but because of my teaching schedule these days, I try to do yoga at least 3x a week & weights at least once a week!
Do whatever that makes you look good & feel good! 😸

Aparigraha. The fifth Yama, literally translates to non-possessiveness or non-attachment. It’s my most favourite of the yogic ideals, and also my greatest challenge. To remain fully committed to my goals and act strongly with intent while also remaining unattached to the outcome. Tricky business to say the least.

Last year I had aparigraha tattooed on my right forearm in Bali. It’s a daily reminder. To let go of the illusion of control and let everything be, just as it is.

We use this principle on the mat to not get too attached to achieving certain goals. Not beating yourself up if you didn’t nail that perfect handstand. Enjoying every moment of your practice, regardless of your performance.

If you know me, you’ve probably suffered through my “zoo story” about incorporating aparigraha into daily life. If you don’t then humour me for a minute ☺️

Let’s say you’re planning a day at the zoo with two young children. If you are already a parent of littles, you know that this outing can have a variety of outcomes. 😬

It could be THE BEST DAY EVER - the lions are out, everyone behaves, there’s no line for ice cream and you make it home in time for naps 🙌🏻. Or it could be AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE - it’s hot AF, the lions are asleep, baby has a diaper blowout, toddler must wait in a 45 minute line for ice cream OR HE WILL DIE and they both fall asleep in the car one minute away from home. 😫

You have a choice in your approach to this day of family fun. Optimists say YAY, it’s gonna be the best day ever of all time! This runs the risk of disappointment when the toddler has a classic untied-shoe induced meltdown and ruins everything. Pessimists think “dear god this is going to suck,” rationalising that low expectations will make anything tolerable. But this could create a self fulfilling prophecy, unknowingly bringing negative energy into the mix.

What if you were to just say, “It’s going to be a day at the zoo.” No expectations, no attachment to the outcome. It’s going to be a day, that’s all. Celebrate the wins and laugh off the losses. How freeing is that? This my friends, is aparigraha. #aparigrahaftw #selfie #noshameinmygame #iwashedmyhairtoday

Maybe one day I will get the core and shoulder strength to transition from headstand to pincha to baby bakasana. Today, I’ll celebrate myself for working hard (HIIT) and piking up into the inversion with more ease than before. #chewdoesyoga #practicealliscoming #yogaeverydamnday #yogajunkie #sgyoga #sgyogi

Watching things like “Racing Extinction” makes me feel so sad about the world we live in, what we have and haven’t done consciously & unconsciously.
I used to feel so defeated talking about these topics because you have people who tell you “what’s the point?” “It won’t change anything”
“Small actions can’t change the world” “how can 1 person make a difference?” - or something in that same vein.
It can be so depressing.
But it doesn’t matter.
It’s about the will.
Fighting for causes to make the place we live in a little better is NOT a competition.
Just because you fight passionately for one cause doesn’t mean that you don’t care about something else.
It’s not mutually exclusive.
Fighting for climate change & animal welfare doesn’t mean you don’t care about the rest of the humans that suffer on this planet too. “What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
We are all responsible in one way or another.
And could all afford to care a little more.
The reality is, fighting climate change, saving our world’s animals isn’t glamorous or sexy.
The problem isn’t so simple & everything is so intertwined so it’s easy to get paralysed by it’s magnitude & complexity.
But the focus shouldn’t be on the magnitude or the grand devastation that has & is taking place.
The focus shouldn’t be on how consumerist, excessive, narcissistic we all are or how damn unequal the world is.

We need hope.
We need to inspire.
We need to maintain a dose of optimism when we fight for our Mama Earth, and for ourselves too.
Without hope, we will all fall into a dark pit of apathy.
We can start with small things - a mindset change, a minor lifestyle adaptation, consume less, recycle more than you used to, save, care & love a little more.
Starting small starts with being more conscious, about the little things.
And just because it isn’t always drastic doesn’t mean they aren't worth taking at all. 🙏🏻
As Bobby McLeod says, “To heal ourselves we must heal our planet, and to heal our planet we must heal ourselves.”
We can do this 💪🏻

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
