Everybody agreed to say something about himself. Oddly, there were only males sitting together in the trailer. Someone started counting with Number 1. He said that his name was Peter and he seemed to be angry about being there. There was an aggressiveness in his voice, and he spat out the words. These words were sharp like razor blades, and they were cutting through the darkness of the trailer. Peter seemed to be angry about many things going on in his life, and this was just another thing that made him furious. Everyone could feel that he wanted to scream, but he knew it would only have made everybody upset in the darkness of the trailer.

The second one was Andrew. He was Number 2. It was difficult to understand him because he spoke too softly to counter the noise from the truck. There was no anger in his voice. It was more as if he sought the blame for what happened to him. He talked about how he could have been so stupid to be trapped in such a situation. Many things had gone wrong in his life, and this was only the last in a long line of topics he was struggling with. Hearing him speak it felt like he let his head hang down. Words of helplessness and self-blame wafted like mist through the darkness of the trailer. He blamed himself for not living his life.

Number 3. James was different. He was the rational one saying that everything would be okay and that all of them would make it out of the trailer. He sounded like a football coach giving some advice to his team. However, the players he was talking to were somewhere else with their thoughts, and no one seemed to listen to this well-meant encouragement. It seemed as if he was mainly encouraging himself by giving good advice to others. James talked about the voluntary work he did and how it made him feel good and how he could inspire everyone to overcome such dark situations. He was apparently bragging about his work. Everybody could hear it.

Philip jumped right interrupting James. Number 4 said that it was not the time for encouragements. Uncertainty poured out of his mouth. Apparently, he felt uncomfortable with the whole situation like everybody else. However, with him, everyone could feel it. The virus was spreading fast over the air, and everybody inhaled his portion of uncertainty and discomfort from what he was saying. He was painting horrifying pictures in the darkness, and everybody could feel how the air became poisonous from his thoughts about the ways all of them could die in that trailer.

Thomas tried to turn it around. He was Number 5, and he decided to be reasonable in what he told them. Nobody would harm them. Why should someone? It was like finding arguments why nothing would happen to them. The people who had abducted them had gone to great lengths to carry out their plot. It could also very well be a joke, and every minute they would open the doors of the trailer truck, and everything would turn out a misinterpretation. Form him there was no reason to be frightened. He made it clear that he thought everything would be clarified once they would open the doors again.

Matthew made the skeptic, throwing arguments around and jumping from one corner of the trailer to another. Number 6 was all about a giant conspiracy distracting the minds of everybody in the trailer with things no one could believe. It sounded insane, and it was painful to listen to him. He felt like is the whole body was rejecting the theories coming out of the darkness of the trailer. Someone asked him to shut up.

James cried, and he could not hold the tears. Number 7 wanted to see his wife and his daughter again, that was everything he could think of. That was the only thing he was talking about. He was sobbing, and that made it difficult to understand him. James thought about the words he had left with his loved ones the last time he had seen them. He could not remember what exactly he had told them. However, it must have upset him to think about it. He talked about a child he had lost, and it sounded devastating. It was clear he was a family man and assuming that his family would eventually never know what had happened to him drove him crazy.

Simon seemed to be lethargic about the whole situation. He had not much to say. Number 8 pleaded for staying calm, wait and see what would happen. He said that in his opinion nobody could do something except expecting what would happen. It was depressing to listen to the silence of his speechlessness.

When Jude started talking one could feel the grief in his voice. He pitied himself for being there, and his voice sounded bowed down with sorrow. Listening to number 9 it felt like all of them had already died there in the trailer. It was as if they were buried alive and no one knew it except Jude. Someone told him to stay calm.

Mark was religious and asked whether someone wanted to pray. Number 10 started praying, and it felt like some of the people in the trailer closed their eyes and folded their hands to follow his prayer. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” It must have felt right to him.

Robert seemed to be high as if he had taken some drugs before. It was impossible to listen to him because he seemed to sit there joking about everything and to be high. Number 11 had seriously consumed many drugs and seemed to be out of his mind. However, it was somehow funny even in this situation that he did not realize the predicament of the situation. He was not with them in the trailer; he was somewhere else. It felt more as if he was hallucinating.

Richard had heard everything, and he wanted to try to assure everyone and especially himself that everything would end well. Number 12 was the coach but not so engaging and not so much about the others. It was more about himself, and he sounded more like the little kid running through the dark forest assuring himself that he would reach home unhurt. Interestingly he came up with a Serenity Prayer in its best-known form: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Apparently, he tried to be honest about the situation.

He had to say something, but he refused because he knew it could be difficult for every one of them knowing something about him. He was not supposed to be in the trailer, and he did not want to tell them about his work or that he knew the tricksters. Thinking about the whole situation, he did not want them to pressure him for information. He felt the truck moving and the air becoming more difficult to breathe. It was an awkward situation, and he thought that it would not end well, for no one.

Today I received my copy of Brand New’s extremely limited Science Fiction vinyl release. To say I’m overwhelmed by the thought and intricacy put into this package is an understatement, and I’ve found myself filled with a flood of emotion. #brandnew #jesselacey #sciencefiction

"It’s a combination of elements that I’ve been playing with in my work since I was a kid. It’s a ballpoint pen drawing, using only one pen, acquired from a hotel room in Merida, Mexico. The paper-drawing surface is a dusty found object from the belly of a retired 747 airplane that currently resides in the Mojave Desert. The skull is also a found object, from the carcass of a bobcat that once hunted along the banks of the Colorado River. It is conceptually combining
past/learned mythologies with future/imagined mythologies. The process is the result of a collaboration comprised of my original drawing and the screen-printing ingenuity of the brilliant scientists at 1xRUN."
