#HappyBirthday to Sir David Wilkie RA, born #OnThisDay in 1875. Born in Cults, Fife, Wilkie left school at the age of fourteen to study at at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh under John Graham. An admirer of the works of Alexander Carse and David Allan, he would travel with sketchbook in hand to town fairs and marketplaces, recording scenes of rural Scottish life. Classical scenes from literature and mythology were also sources of inspiration during his studies.

Following five years at the Trustees’ Academy Wilkie returned to Cults. The draw of potential fame and fortune in London quickly grew too great and within a year he had moved south to study at the Royal Academy. He was elected as a full Academician in 1811, and soon after travelled throughout Europe.

Wilkie was appointed the Royal Limner for Scotland following the death of Sir Henry Raeburn in 1823. He travelled again, developing a more continental style and focus on historical scenes after time in France, Italy and Spain, before settling in England in 1828. He was appointed Painter in Ordinary to the King in 1830, and was subsequently knighted in 1836.

Demand for his services was great, and four years of portrait commissions undoubtedly took their toll. In the autumn of 1840 Wilkie journeyed to the Middle East, visiting Constantinople, Jerusalem and Alexandria. He became ill on his return voyage to England, dying off the coast of Gibraltar. His funeral was held on board and commemorated in oil by JMW Turner in ‘Peace – Burial at Sea’. Pictured is Wilkie’s 1830 version of ‘The Penny Wedding’, a work previously painted for King George IV. The 1830 painting, sold by The Fine Art Society in Edinburgh, depicts a ceremony common in rural Scotland, in which guests would each contribute a penny as a gift to the couple upon attending a wedding. This would be used to pay for the ceremony, with the remainder going towards the couple’s first home together.

He became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1956 and a full member in 1966. He and three other members of the Royal Academy resigned in 1997 in protest at the Sensation exhibition of young British artists, including Damian Hirst and Tracey Emin saying 'They've been invited into Burlington House and what have they done? I'll tell you. They've taken advantage of us, written "bum" on the walls and they call it art.'
