I attended the 'REFUGEES ARE WELCOME HERE! Welcome 10,000 NOW' event today at Aotea Square in support of increasing New Zealand's refugee quota. It was great to see Marama Davidson (upcoming Green MP) speak at the event–as she had shown constant and strong support for refugees.
Prior to John Key announcing that we would raise the quota by 600 over the next 3 years, New Zealand ranked 90th in the world in terms of refugee intake per capita. I'm unsure where this very small increase will place us but considering how many refugees other nations are taking we are definitely not doing enough. There is enough in this country for everyone and we stand the chance to make a real difference in one of the biggest crises humanity has faced in recent times.
As an immigrant with many privileges that have enabled me to make the move to New Zealand, I have nevertheless encountered the same xenophobic discourse that is used against increasing the refugee quota. As such, I stand in complete solidarity with refugees. Whether you're a first, second, third, fourth–and so on–generation immigrant, you were given the opportunity to come to this country in search of a better life due to your citizenship, policies, or circumstances. Let's give people who don't have those those privileges a chance.

- Protest by candle light. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that have been lost, those struggling to survive and those that are in grave need of international assistance. We want to be there. United. #refugeesarewelcomenz

60 seconds of silent solidarity at Parliament tonight for the 60 million displaced people ( refugees) in our world. Let's be a more generous NZ. #refugeeswelcomenz
He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people ~ Maori proverb.
