Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it - Merida

This photo is a throwback to an exhibition I was invited to be a part of called 'come as you are' I was modelling at the time for large Australian swimwear and lifestyle brand yet within me I felt wings to fly. At every age and stage of my life the love of flight has been evident in hindsight, it burned quietly away in the back of my heart and mind because I never believed it was possible. It took me years to have the confidence to run to my dreams. This weekend I encourage those younger than me to be brave enough to believe in themselves and their dreams, anything is possible.
This weekend I'm going to be flying solo. It will be the first time for me to have a solo flight in the state of South Australia. As a flight instructor we send so many students on their first circuit solos, training area solos, navigation solos. Students go on long solo adventures but as an instructor there is no need for us to just go take a plane by ourselves. Although earning licences is an enormous and exhilarating achievement the real joy and life long lasting memory always lies within the first solo moments. The first time I ever went in a plane, by myself without family or friends, I climbed on board a small single engine aircraft at 4 years old. I had a bag of lollies for snacks and I spoke with the pilot and other kind old ducks on board. Every one was so nice to me being little and alone. My mum dropped me at the airport for the flight on the coast and my nan and pop met me at the airport in the country. It was an experience that sent my adventure fuelled heart literally soaring. Flying for me isn't just about adventure it's about family, it's about love, for me everything flying, the sky, the plane, even airports, it feels like home. The first ever time I went on a big airline jet I was 10 years old and I flew with #qantas. I went to the cockpit, I had a special QANTAS colouring book and backpack, it was the stuff of childhood dreams.
This weekend I combine those memory making moments, solo flight, childhood joy and the airline that started the dream for me.
