A month or so ago we decided to switch up school. I’ve mentioned it. Changing to an old one room school house method for science, geography, history then independent study time for math and grammar/reading. It has gone really well and the kids all manage to learn while staying on task.
I had been considering these history pockets for a while. Math, reading, grammar, geography I can teach those pretty easily with their curriculum. History was my weakest subject in school. It was just sooooo boring. Sorry to all the history lovers out there. So I needed something interactive and easily understandable for me to teach. Enter history pockets...
The best part is all 3 kids can participate and learn. They arrived the week of the septic issues and we are just getting back to school this week. My 8yo has been chasing me around since Thursday asking to start this study on Native Americans.
After eleventy billion staples and pieces of construction paper, each kids now has a pocket book ready to study through this book. Each unit/pocket focuses on one tribe and has interactive activities for them to complete and put in the corresponding pocket.
Today was all about getting the books put together and an intro. Now can you guess what my kids are running around the cabin playing? Yep I guess that will be a frequent game over the next 2 months.
We also ordered Ancient Civilizations, Life in Plymouth Colony, and two science pocket books as well. Being a maker, I’m a huge fan of interactive creative learning. Plus they all got along really well and listened during the lesson.
It’s not the usual anymore, but I really am enjoying this newer (old school) method in our home.

I found this on my camera roll today (I think the photographer is Shepherd) and it made me stop and think...
Tragedy and heartache and trials are part of this life. A big part, unfortunately. Tragedies that involve children are especially unsettling to me, and I find myself appreciating my kids more...engaging in conversation with them and trying to understand their perspectives, indulging their random little desires, taking time to play with them. Hurting with other mamas who are hurting doesn’t make me a perfect mama. It definitely makes me more grateful for what I have, though. 💛
But along with gratefulness, fear always seems to creep in. I sometimes realize my heart is racing and I’m short of breath, just from allowing my mind to wander a little too far and focusing on the what-ifs.
That’s when I have to stop my mind in its tracks, take those sneaky thoughts captive, and fill myself with truth instead. “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.” {Proverbs 29:25.}
No matter what happens, God is good. His banner over our family is love. His word is truth. Fear, on the other hand, is a liar, and has no place in my life. 🙌🏼
What is your biggest fear as a parent? I don’t know if we can ever get rid of those fears entirely (I mean, #mamabear is a very real thing) but we CAN turn them over to the One who IS truth. “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” {Philippians 4:7.}

Okay, in this #tbt I was told I have a relative in this photo, but there is nothing written on the back (which was rare of my one grandmother not to do). Of all the pieces I could gather, I know it’s an one room school class photo where the school in the background looks like S.S.#8 Adelaide (directly north of Kerwood) around the late 1920’s. A local historian would be able to correct me on this. #oneroomschoolhouse #middlesexcountyontario
