I picked up this copy of Joseph Campbell's Companion from a second hand market in Bristol when I lived there 5 years ago. I sometimes feel like the universe has guided me to the right books at the right time, knowing what I need to read and learn at that very moment in order to simply keep going.
This book took me out of a dark circle of feeling like my life was in shatters with no direction or salvation, to embracing this strange uncertain life of an artist. I've kept this book close ever since, reading it whenever I'm in a phase of transition or change.
There are a lot of books about people who go away for a time of solitude and reflection. Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at tinker creek, Journal of a Solitude by May Sarton, The Lonely City... I love reading those memoirs because solitude brings out a certain spiritual side in everyone. Maybe because you have to to survive such loneliness -- you need to learn to see yourself as part of something bigger in order to not drown in the vastness of silence and isolation.
Maybe I like reading those memoirs because I have built a life that consists of such solitude, floating on my own with no witness but the moon. It feels good to know that others have survived that sort of loneliness too, learned from it and created something from it. I started reading An Unknown Woman over Christmas and it’s a beautiful memoir of one woman’s search for some sort of strength in herself.
What have you all been reading lately? What book changed your life? ♡
