Sarafina Joe, left, helps hang a giant red dress in honor of the missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW) Valentines Day in Flagstaff. Joe’s sister Nicole was murdered by her boyfriend Christmas Day.
@amohbyjade you want to showcase the "rich cultural heritage" of the Dongira Kondh adivasis, then please go ahead and showcase the parts which do not fit your aesthetic as well. Where do you showcase the hard battle and agony they had to go through against Vedanta Resources? Where do you showcase the fact that their land is under threat again? Where do you showcase that the water sources that they've been using for ages are now being polluted to the point where it is causing them health issues, their livestock diseases and their crops damage? Where do you show support for their resistance against police officers who have falsely charged their people with crimes and arrested them? Where do you showcase the isloation and institutional oppression the tribe faces because our people couldn't be bothered to even know that they exist. Do even parts of your profits go to the actual people in the Niyamgiri hills whose culture you just appropriated because and used for your own benefit and profit just because people can't take legal action against you? You receiving appreciation for appropriating the culture of tribes that we continually neglect and overlook, does absolutely nothing to help out the people whose culture you are "displaying". #adivasilivesmattet #culturalappropriation #dongirakondh #orissa #india #incredibleindia #niyamgirihills #adivasi #castesystem #india #incredibleindia #fuckcapitalism #jade #amoh #amohbyjade #feminism #woc #intersectionality #poc #humanrights #smashthepatriarchy #yesallwomen #nativerights #indigenouspeople #peopleoverprofit

Saw Mary Kathryn Nagle’s “Sovereignty” play last night and wow...Powerful. Focuses on historical and present day struggles of tribal sovereignty, but also addressed the injustices against native women. Very proud and thankful to Nagle for bringing these issues to light in a creative, passion-filled, must-see play. Hope they record it to be shared more widely! #sovereignty #nativerights #indigenousrights

This past weekend I visited this petroglyph, known as a waterglyph, along the Utah/Arizona border.

The nigh was frigid and the landscape was desolate. I didn't see another living soul the entire time. However, it seemed as if at one time this was an important place, a place where things occurred.
The petroglyph points straight east to where the sun would rise and for me the rising moon, as seen sitting in the core of the milky way.

Places like this need to be kept as the are, far from city lights, and the noise of roads. We need places like this that allow us to have one foot in this world and one foot in the other.
This is my first photo in this style of this year. Hopefully more will follow. However, It's a challenge to do many in this theme.
Driving, finding the sites... Then trying to photograph the site in a way that I can be sure not to damage it. This usually involves predicting composition in the daylight, setting up the camera and leaving everything in place until the appropriate time.
Sometimes I'll program the camera to take photographs at a specific time, especially if I don't feel comfortable or if it seem disrespectful to be bumbling around at night. Other times I'll return at a certain hour and take the photo.

Usually these photos consume an entire weekend and I usually come away with a single image, sometimes two.
