with great gratitude and humility I need the ancestor wisdom that shines through at yesterday's ceremony. these moments call that we stay woke. call that we live out what we believe. demand that we see their struggle as our struggle bc they are looking at us seeing our struggle as their struggle. these are the moments to bow our heads in gratitude and expand.

A ho.

Sydney Freeland
Sydney Freeland is a transgender filmmaker who uses film to combat stereotypes about Native Americans and highlight the experiences of queer and trans people. Her debut feature length film, Drunktown’s Finest, follows the lives of three young people living on the Navajo Reservation: a young father-to-be, a transgender woman who dreams of being a model, and a woman who was adopted by a white Christian family. The film’s name is a riff off an offensive ABC news segment that labeled Gallup, New Mexico, as “Drunk Town, USA.” Freeland also directed web series Her Story, which revolves around queer and trans women, and was nominated for an Emmy. - @bitchmedia
The film follows three young Native Americans living on a reservation in New Mexico. There’s Felixia, a promiscuous young trans girl who’s forced to fend off bullies as she strives to be a model; the bookish Nizhoni, whose adoptive white parents try to distance her from her Navajo background; and Sick Boy, a rebellious father-to-be preparing to join the army. The three narratives begin to intertwine as the characters struggle to reconcile where they came from with where they want to go.
Freeland began working on Drunktown’s Finest at the Sundance Directors Lab, the highly selective workshop run by Robert Redford, who is now one of the film’s executive producers. “You’re flown to a resort in Utah for a month, where you shoot four scenes from your film that never see the light of day,” explains Freeland. The film premiered at Sundance last year and has since won a number of awards, including Outfest's Grand Jury Award for U.S. Dramatic Feature Film and the HBO-sponsored Audience Award for First Feature. Its theatrical release comes at an auspicious moment, one that finds mainstream culture suddenly engaged by storytelling about transgender people both fictional and real. - @vogue

This time last year, Standing Rock warriors were fighting for the water. And now, we know of a massive oil spill from the pipeline.... my heart is broken for our collective brokenness. I am grateful, yes, but also very aware of our origins. We do not have clean hands.#waterislife #nativerights #istandwithstandingrock #still

I appreciate the *idea* of a holiday that is about gratitude and nothing to do with commercialism (although Black Friday follows immediately afterwards, negating that intention completely...), but the entire premise of Thanksgiving is cruelly untrue. We have yet to admit to or fully contend with the genocide that was committed on this soil. To mark this day, I wanted to share some quotes from Native scientist, writer and activist Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer (swipe for quotes, content: genocide, native oppression, abuse.)
It's usually at the new year that we make resolutions for the future, and although this has been a private resolution of mine, today I want to share and make myself accountable to 1. educating myself and others and 2. making reparations through action, donation, and community involvement as an ally to Native/ indigenous people.
I hope that we can come into the right relationship that Dr. Wall-Kimmerer envisions in the future. Anything less would be an abject failure of human rights.
▪️There are many things about history that I simply don’t understand or know enough about▪️ Thanksgiving day is one of those. Feeling grateful is an entirely separate thing. I truly love and appreciate getting together with my loved ones, sharing food, laughter and affection. But my ancestors will not be forgotten. My native roots are interwoven with the history of violence. I do not honor that. I honor my heritage, and the fact that I made it to this moment to speak my mind, acknowledge the past and sing songs of hope for the future. Today I am greatful for my voice and all those who respect the indigenous ways in more ways than one. ▪️photo by @maddfoxmagdalena #givethanks #indigenouspeoplesday #waterislife #standingstrong #standingrock #nativerights #nativenotamerican #blessthisland #holy #sacred #greatspirit
