3, rue de Tilsitt (angles of avenues Hoche and Friedland)
This mansion is one of the coordinated series “hotels des maréchaux” designed in 1853 by architect Jacques-Ignace Hittorff for Place de l’Etoile (now place Charles de Gaulle).
It was Prefect Haussmann’s idea to create an entire urban composition around the Arc de Triomphe; the series of mansions form a large circus with twelve avenues radiating out like the spokes of a wheel, as can be seen from the top of the monument. For the architecture of the place de l’Etoile, Jacques-Ignace Hittorff proposed a scheme consisting of low buildings that would enhance the Arc de Triomphe. Haussmann disliked the idea but the emperor Napoleon III agreed with the architect. Here this is the back of one U-shaped mansion with a courtyard and a glass canopy.
