It's a track that I am so glad to have gotten today. Long day at work, my bosses pulled some shenanigans and I was drinking caffeine just to keep my eyes open. But when this British press #voguerecords was opened my eyes lit up! I scooped up bill gave him a bone and now we're sitting listening to 78s but I had to post this ASAP. I've read Gigi Gryce's bio and am fascinated by the man. He was a nervous wreck like me and suffered several breakdowns like me 😋but he had a musical talent that I can only imagine possessing. He wrote and wrote and wrote more music and hated the music money establishment. He was one of the first musicians to set up his own copywriting company for music which helped him and the musicians he knew greatly. He traveled a great deal and spent some time studying European classical music an composition. There is a lot of mystery surrounding his life and much is not clear. He did however spend a good part of his life in my hometown of Hartford CT. I wish I could post the whole 78 but I picked Mobley's solo into idreess's and then most of Gigi's on Alto. It's a tight track. I've been digging through and trying to track down Gigi's music and this was a pleasant surprise seeing as the musicians here are working it hard. So I hope you enjoy and I'll post the 2nd side soon on @swingin78s my other account. But you silly people who don't follow yet need to see what the musical magic of 78s are so you can head over there. -

Fun play today with the quintet! Working on some Max Roach/ Clifford Brown tunes, and then we had a blow over ‘Just One of Those Things’ at the end.

Clifford Brown All-Stars (Emarcy, 1956)

For a variety of reasons, I try not to download or listen to too much stuff these days before I stumble upon the record. This has many upsides but one of the few downsides is that I sometimes take awhile to get into certain artists due to the rarity of their catalog. In Clifford Brown's case, his tragic 1956 death is a huge factor. I found an original pressing of a Brownie record for the first time today at @jupiterrecords. I've been sick since Thursday, and I thought I was well enough for a dig today, but I was pretty beat by the time the other half and I got home. After some R&R, I'm feeling mostly better, thanks in part to this find. This was the first posthumous Brown release, and constitutes the unused tracks from his "Best Coast Jazz" date, released in 1954. Naturally, this group includes Max Roach, and it includes many other greats as well. Curtis Counce and Kenny Drew round out the rhythm, and the front line is supported by altoists Herb Geller and Joe Maini as well as tenor man Walter Benton. Things might get crowded if the date didn't consist of two side-length tracks. "Caravan", naturally, is arranged as a call-and-response between Brown and the saxes, and is a good showing from everyone, but Roach is the star. His rhythmic accents go down to 64th notes. His solo flights are incredible, dynamic, and highly original. He supports the other players with such creativity that the ear is naturally drawn to him. On the other side, "Autumn in New York" is a more relaxed outing that sees Roach calming down and allowing everyone else to shine as well. These two long jams are great vehicles for exploration for all of the players, and in my opinion don't deserve to be viewed as outtakes. Good stuff. Not as good as severe cold medicine in this context, but still really good.
