artist analysis:chance the rapper
discography ranking:
1. coloring book
2. acid rap
3. 10 day
chance is an extremely likable person and he smartly uses that as the core of his music. i feel like this personality is what causes people to 1) overrate him and 2) become huge fans of him. i’m not gonna lie, i like this guy. his music can be phenomenal at some points and just mediocre at others, however.
10 day doesn’t really have any attention grabbing moments. it’s pretty lowkey and is representative of chance’s influences, particularly kanye west and even more specifically, late registration. chance has been outspoken in his love for that album and that does show up here. although i do love late registration, 10 day really doesn’t show anything special or unique about chance. it’s good, but far from great.
acid rap changes the lack of uniqueness and originality of 10 day. chance addresses weightier issues such as gun violence and drug addiction, but not perfectly. you can hear his youth and immaturity within his lyrics and his lack of real insight or opinion. stating the facts doesn’t make you smart. occasionally though, repetition of these facts create a haunting and kind of sad environment, like on acid rain. despite these occasional surface level lyrics, acid rap is enjoyable. the production and chance’s own delivery and flow is quite enjoyable. it’s a good match between a bouncy pop rap sound and the later gospel-inspired music chance would make on coloring book.
coloring Book is chance at his most mature. The production isn’t as poppy and upbeat as Acid Rap, but it is just as varied and exciting. coloring book focuses on Chance’s positive outlook and why we should all think the same way. it’s the mixtape 2016 really, really, really needed. chance is the real star of this project, making every song his own and expanding on his already likable personality. so why does he need a feature on every fucking song? justin bieber’s boring hook on juke jam and kanye’s singing on all we got are the only real bad features, but the rest are just quite unnecessary.
despite my criticisms, there is no denying chance’s talent. he’ll soon make a great project.

In my books Kendrick Lamar is one of the best MC of this gen next to the likes of Kanye, Jay Z and Kid Cudi. Kendrick has dropped 4 amazing albums (Not counting Untitled Unmastered) The story telling on GKMC. The story telling on songs like "The Art of Peer Pressure" & "Swimming Pools." The jazz influnced and the impactful message on TPAB. The one of the few Hip Hop albums without a single 808 on the whole album. The double meaning on songs like "These Walls." And the weird but not weird story on DAMN. Kendrick is able to show his many talents when it comes to making music on songs that seem from two different artist on songs like "Duckworth" & "Love". Do not forget you have the choice of playing the albums backwards. What are your thoughts on Kendrick Lamar?

[Summary below, full review in slides above]

Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!”! is an incredible ride front to back. With influences from George Clinton and the Parliament-Funkadelics, Sly and the Family Stone, Prince, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix and more, Gambino crafted an album that could’ve came straight from the 70’s but somehow made his own lane for it. All the sounds and influences on this album meshes well together.
All the sounds felt like live instruments playing, making this album great for concert performances. Gotta also praise Gambino for his vocal delivery on these tracks. His change in vocals on all of these tracks are phenomenal.

This is also Gambino’s most mature record so far, and his most different. All his albums don’t sound alike, but I would have to say this is my favorite album from him. It’s sad that he might move on from this to do something different, but it’s exciting at the same time because I know this man has the talent to do anything, so I’m wondering and anticipating what he does next. All I can say is thank you to Childish Gambino for taking a another risk and dropping an unbelievable album. #MusicMarauder #MusicMarauderReviews

TOP TRACKS: Riot 🔥🔥, Me and Your Mama, Redbone, Baby Boy, Have Some Fun, Boogieman.... just throw the whole album
