We’ve been practicing skip counting with the Classical Conversations curriculum CDs for several months now. And let me tell you, it is incredibly rewarding to see the fruits of our labor through the application of skip counting coin values! (We found these Hot Dots flash cards at the thrift store. The pen was not included, but we’ve still put them to good use. Amazon has a wide selection of these! We are currently using the money and US geography sets.)

Yesterday looked like: books in bed (including Hidden Under the Ground: The World Beneath Your Feet), memory games, 'I am Malala' audio book, Christmas-y crafting, backyard explorations, followed by candy cane hot cocoa made by Sylvia, followed by sister snuggles and a Christmas movie, followed by yummy dinner made by the teenager and the teenager's boyfriend. It's a good life.

Really there isn’t a curriculum. We read aloud books that are full of adventure, imagination, and virtue. Some are wonderful classics, some are more modern. Some are picked by me, some by my daughter (she really likes the Wizard of Oz series). My one criteria is that it’s just quality writing. Otherwise, if they’re willing listeners I will read almost anything (that’s appropriate)! We’re currently reading Dr. Dolittle, and for the first time EVER, even my 3-year old son sits and listens! He even pretends he’s Chee-Chee the monkey. 🐒 We read other books to supplement science, history, and math too. We love the library! There are several great lists with suggestions on what to read at what level—#amblesideonline has a whole free curriculum, @readaloudrevival is another great option! I’m actually reading some books from her suggestions right now too. But if I had to do only one thing in homeschool, it’d be reading. Reading anything and everything!

--- We just finished up our 77th day of Homeschool Kindergarten. We've been doing a lot of reading this week, but we're both learning SO much. I'm so thankful I found @bookshark to help us on this journey! ⠀

This is true with every single subject. Whether it is math, science, language, music or any other subject. This is why I always insist that parents should take a leading role in teaching their children to play an instrument, because unlike when the learning process is outsourced, when it is carried out in home with the parent, the child is able to learn it at his or her own pace, in the style that he or she likes the most and at whatever time that is best suited for the child. Are you teaching your child to play an instrument or have you outsourced that function? I would love to know why?

🎄 Sugar cookie baking! We had a blast but this recipe was a fail with our gluten free flour. ☹️ The cookies tasted great, but were too crumbly! Ah well, there's always another recipe to try. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Love these sweet and crazy afternoons!

I love how he is becoming such an independent learner...all I have to say it is time for school and he grabs his binder and pulls out his Morning sheets and gets started before I can sit down. What makes me even happier is seeing him smile while he is working. #homeschooling #howwehomeschool #independantlearner #brownhomeschool365 #blackhomeschool365

A #carschooling type of day. We had so many errands to run! We spend the whole morning running between government entities and listening to #wowintheworld and reviewing math facts in the car. I love that school can happen anywhere. We are totally caught up so comment with your favorite kid podcasts below!

🕯My husband took the kiddos to a Christmas party, and before I get back on Amazon to find a couple last minute things and figure out dinner (seems dinner has been last minute around here lately, ahem), I decided to sit on the couch with the extra portable heater directed straight at me so I can warm up, reheat my tea for the umpteenth time (an actual number at our house 😋), light my favorite candle, and read some soul-nourishing words ❤️
Because, mommas, we need to nourish ourselves, too. We all love our children dearly (and many of you also home educate...meaning we have the blessing of being around them all the time. And I truly see that as such an amazing blessing). But, in order to keep these sweet little people alive and thriving...we need to give ourselves a quiet boost sometimes. Even during this often-lovely-but-sometimes-bonkers time of year. (I’m totally #preachingtomyself here 😉)

Today was for the birds. 🦅 We studied about winter birds in our area, put together a bird puzzle, read bird books, and made bird feeders! We’ve had a slow day and didn’t make it to painting the birds. Maybe tomorrow.

Super casual. Science is mostly a response to the why questions and what we see/experience in our daily lives. We’re casually covering biology this year mostly talking about animals, our bodies, and plants. We spend as much time outside on nature hikes as we can, exploring and discovering all sorts of sights, sounds, and smells! Our curriculum is based off the recommendations from #TheWellTrainedMind. I pull some from #elementalscience but mostly we read a concept, look at an animal/thing that applies the concept, then do an experiment or activity. I do have a book for experiment ideas too (not pictured). At this age, science is best taught through being outdoors in nature so that’s really our “curriculum” and also free! 😉 The books here cost around $35, and I always see science experiment/activity books for kids at thrift stores so maybe another $3 for that.

I mentioned before that we aren’t really changing school too much for Christmas, but I have been adding a study of a different “Christmas element” each day during morning time. Today’s study was on the Nutcracker. We read this cute book that tells the story, listening to music, designed our own nutcrackers, and then watched a bit of the ballet. ❤️

💙Instagram REPOST via @mommie_dearest_of_2 // See our literature-based Science programs by clicking on the link in our Instagram profile.--- Mommy... We learned about bones last week in school so can I read this book about bones and the body while you copy school work?⠀

Alexander always has his nose in a book just like his mommy. I love how #bookshark inspires him to learn more about topics that interests him. ⠀

I managed to get some sleep last night, despite a still sick baby, so we're carrying on with our focus on advent. I love how Jesus is being beamed down to earth in his copywork illustration. 😂
