A good piece of advice in soap making—when lining your mold, make sure to use plastic bags that don’t have any print on them. The ink comes off on the soap! Those bars will be staying with me 😊😁 #soapmaking #soapmaker #lyesoap #soap #tricksofthetrade #homesteading #lessonslearned #soaps

Here comes the sun! ☀️ I've been looking for a great natural sunscreen that doesn't come packaged in a bunch of plastic. A lot of the advice I've gotten is to "stay in the shade" and "don't go out in direct sunlight" 🙄 um, yeah, clearly you've never been a homesteader. Anyways, I've tried a looooot of natural sunscreens over the years and I finally found one I like! I gave it the true test on our vacation in Key West (no small feat as I am a VERY pale girl from Idaho!). It wasn't greasy, it wasn't chalky and it was very lightweight and easy to apply! It spreads well so a little goes a long way! We reapplied often and I could definitely tell the spots I missed! Check out @laguna_herbals and get ready for the summer sun! (Also- Not being paid for this post!) .

Spring in the Secret Garden at Rawganique. Once a homesteader, always a homesteader. We converted the parking lot at the Rawganique office into a secret organic garden and now that spring is here, we wanna give you a peek into the secret life of the garden. ;) Flowers are here for inspiration and critters, while the real stars of the show are organic vegetables and fruits (coming next post). We want to support life - we love all bees, butterflies, birds, and all critters. Hence, we strive to provide a habitat for them in our quickly diminishing natural landscape. And it provides inspiration as our team walks through the breezeway to work.

Got a liitle one with ear mites...ive treated with olive oil and quarantined him in a separate brooder. He was tearing his own face off trying to scratch his ears, so i made him shoes.... Quite sure he hates me, with good reason, but he is already feeling better and he's going to live. He hasn't scratched his head all morning, hes eating and drinking. First case of ear mites on a chick that i have ever had. I have zero clue where he got them, and he's the only one with them.
I hope it never happens again because he was going to legit tear his own head off, but i am grateful it happened because i know what to do now.

Mitsy and Midge my bearded lady cross breeds. Daughters of King Sal the Silver Laced Wyandotte hatched out from blue Ameraucana eggs last fall. I love their faces!

We needed a place for our meat birds, so I built one. They seem happy tromping through the pasture grass, getting fat and tasty. Fun little project to put together, but I don’t think I’ll quit my day job just yet. #hammerandtine #homesteading #chicken #tractor #meatbirds #knowwhereyourfoodcomesfrom #montana #bitterrootvalley

Last birds to be added to our flock this year, pearl guineas. They’re so dang cute and little speed demons that didn’t want to go into the brood box! It too me and my mother in law to scoop them inside! #guineafowl #keets #guineafowlofinstagram #guineafowlkeets #flock #countrylife #newbabies #countryliving #cuteascanbe #lovethelittles #itsthesimplethings #contentinthecountry #homesteading #feedyourfamily #resource #foodfromhome
I woke to the sound of the birds chirping in the tree just outside my window. Walked my dogs and said good morning to my goats and chickens and ducks. Now I am enjoying a cup of coffee in the stillness and silence of the house.
In just a bit a friend will be here and with sun shining, we plan to do some work in the garden, getting things ready to plant and grow. Tiny seeds will go in soon that will blossom into the foods we will eat all winter long.
I have nest boxes to clean out and water troughs to clean and refill. There are eggs to collect and new fences to put up.
Full spring days and intentional living.

Our baby easter eggers aren’t looking so baby-ish any more! Can’t wait to integrate them into the flock!
Have you ever added to your flock? How did it go? Do they seem to take to each other easily?

Stumbled across this picture for #throwbackthursday and it reignited my lust for spring! Luckily it seems all the know we got last night will be gone by the time I get home tonight! Can't wait for my swamp to be lush and green again! 🌲☀️🌲

Y’all I am now making 3/4 gallon of kefir DAILY! I just can’t keep up! So I am selling some of my kefir grains. If you’ve never heard of kefir, it is a cultured dairy product similar to yogurt, but thinner and drinkable. You can use it in smoothies and many other different recipes. Making kefir requires no special equipment; all you need is a silicone or plastic strainer with small holes, some glass jars, and a funnel. It’s very easy to make and is an amazing probiotic, good for helping people who have stomach and digestive issues, and can strengthen your immune system. For $15 I’ll give you starter grains and a set of detailed instructions with a few recipes to start you off. And yes, I can ship them so if you live far away don’t let that stop you! As long as you’re in the USA 😉 #kefir #kefirgrains #kefirgrainsforsale #probiotics #healthyfood #healthylifestyle #homesteading #culturedfood #guthealth
