Armistice Day: observed on November 11th every year and commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on November 11th, 1918—in other words, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Although hostilities continued in some areas, the armistice essentially brought an end to four years of fighting in the First World War.

Yesterday, #citizenscientist, John Watermeyer & I went to #Silvermine Nature Reserve (QDS 3418AB) to take some #repeat #photographs, one of which I have decided to showcase in today’s #ThrowbackThursday. This #historical photograph #5137 was taken by David Jones in the late 1960s. The original caption is, ‘Silvermine region (Pines)’ & was taken before pine #plantation removal (& subsequent fynbos #restoration) began in #silverminenaturereserve around the 1990s. This photograph was fairly difficult to find because most of the skyline is blocked by #pine trees. We think that it was taken from Silvermine East, potentially toward Silvermine West. Do you recognise this section of skyline in Silvermine? Please comment & tag me @samantha.venter, with any suggestions. There are several photographs taken in & around this reserve. Can you find them & take a repeat?

This #ThrowbackThursday features historical photograph #5153 of ‘Swaziland highveld’ in QDS 2631AC taken near Mbabane, the capital of Swaziland, by David Jones in 1969. Swaziland is a land-locked country in southern Africa bounded by South Africa & Mozambique. It is roughly divided up into three main regions: the #Highveld in the west, #Midveld in the middle (roughly), & the #Lowveld in the east. The west is largely dominated by #grassland with patches of forest while the middle to eastern portions of the country are largely dominated by #savanna. There are several #photographs taken in & around this #kingdom. Can you find them & take a repeat?

Just came across this incredible picture by chance:

Painters clinging onto the suspender cables of Brooklyn Bridge, New York. Photo taken by Eugene de Salignac (1861-1943) on 7th October 1914, when health & safety regulations were clearly a little more lax than today!

In the second image you can see a rather nerve-racking close-up! Just don't look down ;-) #nervesofsteel

In time for the clocks going back tonight:

A series of photographs, taken 1913-1914, showing a fundraising campaign clock at the construction site of the new J. P. Morgan's headquarters on Broad & Wall Street, New York. The four million dollar campaign, for a joint YMCA/YWCA, was the largest in world history up to that time. Campaign clocks like this one were erected at various strategic locations to keep the project in the public eye. The last photograph shows the completed bank headquarters.

Circa 1967: Officers transport an individual to the police ambulance. Back then, a lot of EMS work was provided by the police department down to the transfer to hospital. How many of you current sworn are glad they are more "separate" now? (Aside from being first to secure the scene and render aide until a form of EMS or Fire arrives). ⚫🔵⚫

October 1976: The task force was the first of its kind in United States Police history. By the end of it in 1978, all officers were injured, three in gun battles. Two suspects were killed. 350 + individuals were arrested and charged with 450 criminal offenses. The robbery rate was reduced more than 28 percent. What follows is a short history of the men who were known as the “last gun-slingers”---SDPD’s Border Alien Robbery Force. 10 police department volunteers and 4 officers from the U.S. Border Patrol and Customs Patrol were trained to "put a lid" on the crimes committed against legal and illegal persons in the South Bay area. They covered an 8 mile stretch of terrain on the U.S. Mexico Border, essentially using themselves as human bait. With $200,000 worth of equipment they relentlessly fought against the rough terrain (which included rattlesnakes, tarantulas, and cholla cacti) while seeking out bandits, rapists, smugglers, cartels, and drug dealers. Illegal aliens were often in danger of being killed by their smugglers and BARF made efforts to stop this. After 19 months, the federal government made no efforts to assist the BARF team. Police Chief Bill Kolender ordered the most dangerous assignment in the SDPD be permanently disbanded. ⚫🔵⚫
