Making Forward Progress. The theme I adopted in the second week of my Arizona Trail thru hike in 2016. The 800 mile ribbon of trail beckoned me forward at every decision point, urging me to avoid distractions and detours. Stay on course toward my primary goal: to walk the entire Arizona Trail.

I was amazed to be at the 100 mile point in my journey. Step by step, day after day, making forward progress.

Making Forward Progress has stayed with me in life off the trail, helping me to focus on what really matters. To minimize the stuff, activities and distractions that can take me off course.

What steps can you take to Make Forward Progress on what matters most to you?

Exploring Black Canyon Recreation Trail. Walking among saguaros is always divine. Nice way to break up the drive from Scottsdale to Flagstaff.

🌟I’m willing to bet that you never looked at your feet as a precious gift. Your feet aren’t just made for pretty shoes or cute sandals. Nope!! They’re made for moving and this lovely 92 year old Harriette Thompson is doing just that. She took up running at age 76 and in 2015 she ran a Marathon. My question is, what’s your excuse? You don’t have to run a marathon or join a run club, you just need to get moving. Don’t let the day come that you “wished” you had gotten to moving your feet. Set a goal to walk 10,000 steps in a day or walk 3x a week 30 min. If Ms. Thompson can do it, so can you. Move something!! #TeamLocks #Movesomething #Runforit #Healthyatanyage #Whatsyourreason

Walking mindfully. Connecting and being in relationship with everything around me. This was my intention on my Arizona Trail thru-hike in 2016. 🌎
Tough terrain, blazing heat, or pummeling wind could take the mindfulness right out of me. Frustration and fatigue would take over. In those moments, the earth would often gift me with a spectacular flower. Like this striking claret cup cactus bloom. 🌸
To me, flowers are a prayer of beauty, love, and a reminder that all is okay. My body relaxes and smiles. My spirit is renewed, and I feel grateful to be walking the Arizona Trail. 😊

With each passing day on the AZT, my being harmonizes with the rhythms of nature. My morning ritual: Wake before sunrise. Watch, listen and feel the day begin. Colors change quickly in the sky, and on this day, a stunning sliver of moon. Bird song is sublime in my ears. The first rays of sun are welcome warmth in the cool, early morning. 🌙
At this point near the 100-mile mark in my 2016 Arizona Trail thru-hike, I’m on Nature Time. Clock Time has little importance. The cycles of nature are a key guiding force of life on the trail, being outside 24/7.
The forward march of spring in the southern Arizona desert demands attention. Becoming one with nature in all her forms is paramount to moving in relative comfort, ease and safety. Desert temperatures can fluctuate greatly from cool nights to hot afternoons. ☀️
The late afternoon will bring cooler temps, more shade, and eventually the transition of sunset, dusk, stars filling the sky, and the natural inclination to slow down, rest, and sleep. 🌌
The cycles of day and night. Cycles of the season. We are one with nature’s rhythms. We ARE nature. 🌅

The woman on the right 8 months ago, thought she could become the woman on the right and she has!
There have been many ups and downs the past 8 months but I have never given up. Why? Because even when it seemed impossible, or that I was too old, or I was weak, my Coach and my group kept me motivated! They encouraged me and with God’s help and their support I have continued. I have stayed strong, and believed in this process.
I am starting a new Fit Club in one week with my coach and the other coaches on our team. We will be using workouts, meal plans, meal prepping tips, recipes, Accountability, support, nutritional guidance, and fun with prizes for the challenges we will have for everyone.
Summer is just around the corner you can be swimsuit ready too! Just drop a 💪🏻 below 👇👇👇 But I only have 5 spots and we are filling them fast!#ageisjustanumber #findingfitat60#60isthenew40 #healthyatanyage#purposeinlife #gettingbetter #loveyourownskin #makinglifebetter #funfitness

Two and a half days of seeing no one. Day 5 on my 2016 Arizona Trail thru-hike. My first long stretch with no humans. I was content being alone, and experiencing a deeper presence in the landscapes of the wilderness. 🌤
Being alone also unites us with the landscapes in the mind. We listen to ourselves and get to know ourselves more fully. It’s illuminating to watch our mind, and choose which thoughts to engage, and others to let pass by like clouds in the sky. I found myself processing and healing the past; playing games in my mind; and sometimes my thoughts would take me into unproductive territory. 😬
To shift my mind away from complaining or worrying, I used my favorite mantra, repeating it over and over to myself silently. (You can use a prayer, affirmation or mantra that resonates with you.) My mantra was (and still is) a tremendous support for me on the trail, connecting me to faith, trust and love. 🙏
A long hike gives us something we need in our lives: silence, space, listening to our wisdom and our intuition. 😊
Some have difficulty being alone, being in silence, and being with our thoughts. Numerous hikers listen to music on the trail, and some sleep with earplugs to avoid hearing wilderness sounds in the night. 🏕
If you’ve been on a long hike, I’d love to know: Do you hike with music or camp with earplugs? Are you comfortable or uneasy being alone and in silence? Please share below!

It’s thru-hiking season on the Arizona Trail! March is the month for northbound AZT thru-hikers to typically begin their adventure. In celebration of the many hikers getting on the trail this month, I’ll be sharing photos and insights from my Spring 2016 AZT thru-hike, in a series beginning today. 😎
This photo is Day 1 of my thru-hike, near the Arizona/Mexico border. I was beyond thrilled to be taking the first steps on my walk through the state of Arizona. So much preparation led to this moment of leaving my friend, Leigh Anne, who had transported me to the border, and beginning my solo walk on the ribbon of trail across the entire state of Arizona. 🏕
I felt anticipation of what was ahead, of the landscapes I would experience, and the wonder of getting to know my home state at a walking pace. 🌵
I looked forward to the mindfulness of connecting with the earth, and with myself. I intutively knew that my journey would change me somehow, but I really had no idea of what was to come. ✨
My gear was ready and tested, my resupply boxes were packed and in the mail (or ready for my husband to mail), and I felt so relieved that the stress of final preparations was behind me! As I began the 3000-foot climb up to Miller Peak on Passage 1, I was somewhat in awe, that here I was at last, beginning my thru-hike on the Arizona Trail.
To everyone on the AZT this season, I wish you a magnificent journey through the wilderness, and through the territory of your own mind and heart. ❤️

LAWD HAVE MERCY!! Meet my dad Grampy whose name autocorrects to “Grumpy” which is pretty befitting ... lol !! He is 82 and I kid you not wants “wash board abs” and to strut like Dustin Johnson?? A golfer? ... oh brother !! -
Long story short - yesterday he was studying a diet that his insurance company suggest he use.... the usual 1800 cal ...ada ...blah blah blah. So I reluctantly suggested whole30 and I say reluctantly because of well he can get “grumpy” and there is a lot to it and cost etc. Well fools rush in we go - first question can I have booze ... ?? So I decided to make a hybrid of whole 30 and paleo. #foodfreedom This is going to be a challenge... can I get an amen !!!😫😫😫
