Although many know that Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, there were many presidents before him who approved as well as disapproved of the holiday. George Washington declared Thanksgiving on two different occasions, the second coming after the whiskey rebellion. After Washington left office, John Adams and James Madison intermediately declared days of Thanksgiving. Even Lincoln’s adversary during the Civil War, Jefferson Davis proclaimed Thanksgiving in 1861 and 1862. Many however were weary of the federal government declaring holidays. Aedanus Burke, member of the House from South Carolina and many other Anti-Federalist opposed the day. Burke was of the opinion that the holiday was too "European." He "did not like this mimicking of European customs, where they made a mere mockery of thanksgivings." Perhaps the most famous oppositions to Thanksgiving came from Thomas Jefferson stating:
“ I consider the government of the United States as interdicted by the Constitution from intermeddling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises...Certainly no power to prescribe any religious exercise, or to assume authority in religious discipline, has been delegated to the general government. ...But it is only proposed that I should recommend, not prescribe a day of fasting and prayer. That is, that I should indirectly assume to the United States an authority over religious exercises, which the Constitution has directly precluded them from...civil powers alone have been given to the President of the United States and no authority to direct the religious exercises of his constituents." #thanksgiving #presidents #georgewashington #abrahamlincoln #americanhistory #jamesmadison #thomasjefferson #jeffersondavis #johnadams

A day trip from Washington, D.C., Annapolis, MD is full of hidden histories at every corner. In fact, it was in the Statehouse (Center of the photo) where George Washington resigned his commission over the Continental Army!

A couple more images of the @whitehouse from the holiday decorations exhibit at @thebushcenter. Y’all know how much I love #GeorgeWashington, so I loved seeing the replica of his painting surrounded by such pretty decorations. Apparently the official #WhiteHouseChristmasTree has to be between 18 and 18.5 feet y’all because the outletto plug in the lights is in the ceiling (where a chandelier usually hangs. 😮

The first “thanksgiving feast” was celebrated in 1621, but did you know #Thanksgiving was not an official national holiday until President #GeorgeWashington issued a proclamation in 1789? You can see his original, handwritten proclamation on view at #NMAJH now through the weekend. (Perfect Philly activity for your holiday visitors!) 🦃
