Berberis darwinii, Darwin’s barberry, is one of those useful, but seemingly dull, plants you don’t notice much until it produces these gorgeous, bright orange flowers. Which it does twice a year! Brilliant! We grow it as a hedge where it quickly forms a very prickly barrier. Sun or part shade, fast-growing. #usefulplants #flowerofthday #flowersofinstagram #floweringhedge #plantchoices #gardendesign #orange #pricklyplants #plantsofinstagram

I absolutely love daffodils so I was super excited to see these all whites in Davis. Narcissus have interesting flower patterns. Their petals and their sepals are indistinguishable so they are referred to as tepals. These tepals have a trumpet shaped corona mounted upon them. Members of this genus produce different types of alkaloids (toxic when ingested) in order to combat herbivores. Narcissus are native to the Mediterranean region and the Iberian peninsula.
