Good night stories for rebel girls. Definitely the input I need in these rough and exhausting and seemingly never-ending days. A pile of pinks, a stack of cerise, a burst of blossom 🌷🌺🌹 Also, ‘I’m Still Here’ is a very sweet, underrated wee gem of a book and if you haven’t checked it out already, I really recommend it!

Happy Friday! This week the #ourdaughtersdaughterssociety groups are discussing women and sport in literature in honor of the Winter Olympics. The prompt is making me think of the dedication, tenacity, and competitive streak that it takes to become a champion. These tend to be qualities that society villanize in women- we are expected to be nice and gentle, right? I think many of us can relate to the experience of female being perceived as threatening. On top of the reasons I admire women who reach heights of success in competitive arenas is the mental fortitude it takes to believe in yourself and fight for your success, while being able to block out criticism enough that it doesn’t derail you. I don’t know much about traditional sports, but my favorite lady athlete of sorts is mental competitor @jenshahade , chess champion extraordinaire. I grew up with a chess coach for a Dad, so the competition champions that were role models in our house were world chess chess players 🤓 When I was in first grade Jen Shade won the U. S. Junior Open, which is so cool, and inspiring to a young chess nerd such as myself! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a great chess player, but hearing about female champions made me excited to keep playing. In my local chess tournament circuit there weren’t a lot of girls. Naturally “you play like a girl” was the go-to insult to PWN N00bZ with (as high school chess boys say.) Among all sorts of other accomplishments Shahade has gone on to be both an official chess grandmaster and an author- therefore, her book Chess Bitch: Women in the Ultimate Intellectual Sport is my pick for Our Daughters Daughters Society this week 💃🏻 By random happenstance I wound up sitting behind her at a chess art show a few years ago and was able to get my copy signed. The book draws upon conversations with numerous female chess players to expose and wrestle with the gender bias rampant in this competitive mental sport. For some badass smart women inspiration today, definitely google this champion! Jen, you do incredible work for young women!

Ummm so basically it’s everything that I’m about. It’s been such a pleasure to get to know the team—it’s so clear to me how passionate they are about their product and their mission. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check them out! I’ll be posting there once a week. And tell me below what books matter to you. 👇🏻

Its #feministfriday which means it's time for another #ourdaughtersdaughterssociety post! Hooray! 👧👧👧
.
This week we're focusing on women in sport and the portrayal of women in sporting literature.
.
I'll be honest. I found this nigh-on impossible to do. I own one book about sports and it's written by a man about his running habits. I was a bit lost when it came to picking something to focus on because this isn't really an area I'm interested in. So instead, I'm going to use this week as an opportunity to recognise the fact that this is an ignorance I need to remedy and an area of literature I need to pay more attention to. .
I've picked Cheryl Strayed's memoir 'Wild' to start with because it's a mixture of sport (long-distance hiking) and self-discovery. Plus I can watch the film adaptation afterwards 😊
.
Looking forward to getting some #inspiration from all of your fabulous sporting posts! 🏅

(b* well read) Ode to bell hooks.
I remember the first time I read bell hooks. "Killing Rage: Ending Racism." Fall of 1997. I felt as if a new world had been opened to me. Sigh…the joy of going to the bookstore to look for her latest book. Hot off the presses!

“Reading is an escape and the opposite of escape; it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it’s way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s all too real.” - Nora Ephron // Tell us what feminist stories take you away and leave you inspired. ❤️📚 #books
I went to get ONE of these, but then I couldn’t leave the others behind. I had no business buying more, but these are new releases I’ve been excited about sooooo I don’t feel that bad. ☺️ I already talked about Morgan’s book, so I’ll post about the other two later on. Peggy is the author of Girls & Sex, which I loved so much (I posted about this one, too), and Brittney’s collection is on a subject I often discuss with other feminists. I’ve been obsessed with non-fiction by female writers the last few years, and I hope we get more and more for all eternity. I can’t wait to read all of these. 🔥
Which is another thing: I rarely ever read new releases right away. I’ve been able to lately, but I am so backlogged with my TBR (a lifelong struggle) that I don’t get to anything right away unless I prioritize it. I’ve definitely changed the way I choose. And even though I really want to read what’s just coming out, I do miss the long anticipation of getting to something I know I’ll love. I think I just get sad that the act of reading it is over, and I have to wait a while before I have something more from that particular author. The magic of reading something the first time is the best. ✨

a book written by women of color, edited by a woman of color, and published by a publishing house that seeks to “create cultural inclusion in all aspects of the publishing process”? COUNT ME IN. @nothingbutthetruthpublishing is doing important, much-needed work. Publishing is a predominantly white industry, which as @nothingbutthetruthpublishing points out “means fewer people of color are being published, and it also means these companies are not equipped to market, design or edit culturally diverse books.” Yet in spite of what this book & its publisher represents, ALL THE WOMEN IN MY FAMILY SING stands on its own merit. The essays are as varied in voice & tone as their authors’ backgrounds, but they all touch upon belonging, identity, and finding a place in the world, among many other things. As a collection, their voices come together to comfort, inspire, and challenge. These women write in community and solidarity, exploring how Truths & experiences both transcend our differences and are enriched by them. I’ve only read four essays so far, but this is a collection I know I will treasure and come back to frequently. Thank you @nothingbutthetruthpublishing for providing me with a copy — everyone go check them out! 💪🏽
“Black respectability or ‘appropriate’ behavior doesn’t seem to matter. If anything, black achievement, black aspirations, and black success are construed as direct threats. Obama’s presidency made that clear. Aspirations and the achievement of these aspirations provide no protection. Not even to the God-fearing.” - Carol Anderson, White Rage: The Unspoken Truth Of Our Racial Divide •
.
.
White Rage chronicles our national history during the century and a half since the Civil War, painstakingly and painfully illustrating the systematic racism so inherent in America. This book is harrowing. It’s unsettling. It sinks the teeth of a violent, visceral, vivid history deep into your heart and doesn’t let you go. It’s a powerful, timely, and necessary read for any activist. •

Carol Anderson is the Samuel Chandler Dobbs Professor and Chair of the African American Studies department at Emory University. She is the author of many books and articles and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. •

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine really took me by surprise: I don’t know what I was expecting, really, but this beautiful novel was incredibly touching. It’s the story of a woman who is totally isolated from human connection, living in her own lonely bubble. The novel’s events gradually push her into confronting reality in a way which is moving, unpredictable and often hilarious. Check out Gail Honeyman’s debut novel ASAP!
