Life in the US is becoming literally scary. I've kept my politics pretty far away from my Instagram so far, but if you follow my blog (or listen to my future podcast), you'll be getting pretty hefty doses of it from here on out.
.
For me, my past with #SpiritualAbuse is inextricably linked to my political past. The entire point of my Evangelical indoctrination was absolutely a means of gaining political power for those controlling the churches. They were raising soldiers for their culture wars.
.
And now the people who raised me continually support a man who is the epitome of literally everything they ever taught me to be wrong, and they're doing it even up to and including applauding efforts on his part that could get me killed.
.
I can no longer maintain strict silence on any platform in my power, but I also promise to keep everything positive and/or amusing any time I can.
.
For now, I'll leave it at this: Trump's orders to the CDC are censorship, a hallmark of fascism. There are also rumors that he is considering firing Mueller.
.
To all my American friends: if you are not already a part of #TheResistance, but want to know how to help, comment bellow and I'll hook you up.
.
To all my non-American friends: same thing, but also I'm soooo so sorry about America. We're trying as hard as we can to get this shit under control, I promise. #TheWittyApothecary

#MyMeditation from the other night: I never quite realized just how much bulls*** I had to recover from until that bulls*** made me almost kill myself.
.
Since that day, I've gotten brutally, unbearably honest with myself at times. Coming face to face not only with my destructive tendencies, but also with the root of those tendencies, has been a journey that at times caused my brain to literally break with reality.
.
I tell the whole story on my blog at
thewittyapothecary.wordpress.com

A better working link to my blog is in my bio, and if you can possibly check that out (and possibly my Patreon page), I will be more grateful than you could possibly realize.
.
I am hoping to one day use #TheWittyApothecary to tell my story to the world: the good, the bad, the awkward, and the hilarious. Any financial assistance in that will go towards paying medical bills, and paying for any tools that may help me share my story and my lessons with a bigger audience.
.
My short term goals are to set up a real-life Apothecary Shop on Etsy: making anything from bath bombs to sugar scrubs, smudging sticks, and more. I am also planning on starting a Podcast in the next month or so, using that medium to share my stories, lessons, and advice as well.
.
Thank you so much to everyone who has encouraged and supported me so far. I look forward to your comments and messages every day. Ya'll are the real MVPs in my story.
.
Blessed be, ya'll. #TheWittyApothecary #PregnantWithCancer

I've been obsessed with angel numbers and synchronicities lately, and I was in the midst of screen grabbing it when I realized I hadn't posted my remission update yet today.
.
Long story short: I didn't make it to my remission appointment today. My hip hurt super bad last night, and I had already had a few glasses of wine by the time I realized this, so I couldn't take any pain meds at that point in time. The pain became unbearable, and I couldn't sleep. The pain, being on the eve of my remission-versary, and all the emotional problems that already come due to that, sent me into a series of panic attacks that lasted till the small hours of the morning.
.
So...I didn't make it to my appointment. I emailed my oncologist's office informing them of the situation, but didn't hear back from them today. I intend to call them first thing Monday morning to schedule my next appointment.
.
I'm feeling much better today. I had my therapist appointment, followed by a fun evening grocery shopping with my girl and my husband, and spending the night relaxing in a hot bath before meditating. I am now watching The Fellowship of the Ring with my husband because it's literally the best movie ever made.
.
I promise I will keep ya'll updated after my call Monday.
.
Blessed be, ya'll. #TheWittyApothecary #PregnantWithCancer

This year, I began speaking out as a feminist. Perhaps surprisingly, the most pushback I’ve received (so far) has been from other women.⠀

Conservative Christian women, mostly.⠀

When one of my conservative female friends praised Eve in Exile, a book that defends traditional roles, I knew I needed to read this book to better understand those women who disagree with me.⠀

And boy, this book was a ride.⠀

Has Eve in Exile convinced me to reject feminism and embrace traditional gender roles? Resoundingly and emphatically, no.⠀

But, it did accomplish one thing: It helped me understand those who think differently. So I’m glad for that.⠀

I decided to unpack this book in detail on my blog. You can read my entire response at briannadasilva.blog.⠀

(Or, follow the link in my profile.)

"I've said it many times before, but 'losing your faith'—or at least your faith as you knew it—doesn't happen all at once. It happens slowly, like the Colorado River carving the Grand Canyon out over time, bit by bit through erosion, until one day you wake up and you realize that you don't actually believe anything that you used to believe anymore but you can't quite place when or how that happened. It's disorienting and often startling. The whole world of new possibilities lays itself out in front of you and yet you find it difficult to take a single step forward." Today I went full hippy and attended a workshop run by @edinburghzinelibrary. I've always done arty stuff, but I suck at anything neat or intricate--sewing, knitting, water colour. If I do anything artistic, it's a mess, it's inconsistent, and it probably looks like a toddler made it. Collage? Ripping up books? Scribbling all over stuff? Those are my things. So I glued a bunch of stuff together and made a little 4-page zine, one page of which I'm actually comfortable enough showing the world. The whole experience was super therapeutic so it may happen again. #edinburghzinelibrary #zine #blackoutpoetry #exvangelical

Feeling #blessed on this one month anniversary of @holyblackedout. It’s been so fun, satisfying, and empowering to make a practice of [blacking out] these swords into plowshares—from weapons into instruments of growth and hope. (Even though yes sometimes wine is necessary.) Thanks so much for coming along with me ❤️ #swordstoplowshares #blackoutpoetry #poetsofinstagram #faithfullylgbt #queer #queerfaith #exvangelical

TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED // jk jk this edition of in-transit @holyblackedout brought to you by missed connections and tired feet and rocketing anxiety 🚀 after a very fun and very full trip to NYC to see an old friend 💜 //well-meaning folks quoting that “everything works together for the good of those who love God” was an early red flag for me and I’m still so surprised whenever someone says that in crisis. A great lesson to learn is that a lot of times people project their deepest fears and insecurities onto their idea of "God" because it's easier than facing the truth that life isn't as black and white as we want to make it. In those moments it's helpful to remember that it's not about you — it's about them and their fears, and those fears are not yours to carry.⠀

I've been doing some blackout poetry (I'm not sure if it counts as poetry, but hey) with some of the more problematic pages from old books on Godly womanhood. This one is mostly about participating in acts of resistance and restoration.

"Rebellion is spiritual. Get involved. Search for scriptures to support people. Help people. Here are some steps you can take. First, participate. Second, recognise fear. Ask questions. Try to uncover of you are actually afraid of rejection. Demand a high degree of creative revelation. Take a chance."

So many brave folks have been speaking up about their experiences of abuse, harassment, and assault in recent weeks, with conversations like #metoo and this week’s iteration, #churchtoo (started by @emilyjoypoetry and @garbageoprah), where people have shared these many stories in the context of the church, often sanctioned by the church. I’m struck by the parallel—as so much is being turned over and exposed, here I am covering up the very kinds of text that fuel this abusive shit. In any case, the goal is to tell the truth, and to me it seems actually a very precise way to “love what is good, and hate what is evil,” for we cannot pretend to do one without committing to the other. So in the words of nayyirah waheed, “keep speaking the years from their hiding places,” where you can, when you can, and do not apologize for speaking up. ❤️ #purityculture #metoo #rapeculture #purityculturetaughtme #exvangelical
