"Some success is incredibly impressive, some simple and quaint, others almost absurd. We get hung up on the heights of success we see in the media and forget that it's our personal definition of success that matters. And you can achieve that." - Eric Barker (@bakadesuyo)

Video Excerpt from Barking Up the Wrong Tree by Eric Barker

It’s the kind of book you read to affirm your strengths and contextualize your weaknesses, and it’s tailor-made for the ambitious. Life is not always what you think, but is always a result of how you think.
I chose this excerpt because of its reference to the Turing Test, one I caught in the 2014 movie ex machina about artificial intelligence. Barker highlighted a nuance of the experiment I didn’t know of, a barometer for AI that captured a human element inherent in all of us. @bakadesuyo 🎶: Blue Dot Sessions - On Early Light

Barking up the wrong tree by Eric Barker is one such self-help book that you would read thoroughly to gobble every word. Eric Barker is a great storyteller; he does not drown his readers in a pool of repetitive examples. Few examples and fewer action points to make you wiser. The book is divided into six chapters all dealing with different aspects of self-improvement. At the end of each chapter, an intriguing idea has been provided to connect with the next chapter. Eric suggests how to find a right kind of pond for your personal growth depending on your temperament - an introvert, extrovert or an ambivert. He contests how trying new things by spending mere 5% of your time is worth the effort, as it will eliminate unimportant things or which can be done later. There are many hidden action points which you can use in the time of need; dealing with three different kinds of people – Giver, Taker and Matcher. In conclusion, it is an interesting and an easy read with lots of tricks to roll up in your sleeves.

A few months ago, Eric Barker, an author and blogger at the 'Barking up the wrong tree' blog, wrote a piece about #emotionalintelligence on the #Observer called "New Neuroscience Reveals Three Secrets That Will Make You Emotionally Intelligent". Here is an excerpt with great #tips (as you'll see, I have come up with a brand new word to describe an #emotion of mine - and I now share it with you😊).
☆Emotional intelligence starts with emotional granularity: If your doctor came back with a diagnosis of “you’re sick”, you’d sue the quack for malpractice. Doctors need to be able to distinguish between “chancre” and “cancer.” And you need to know the difference between “sad” and “lonely.” ☆Emotional intelligence is in the dictionary: You can’t feel Fremdschämen if you don’t know what it is. So learn new emotion words so you can feel new emotions and increase your emotional granularity. ☆Create new emotions: We could all use a little more “passion-o-rama” in our lives. Name those unnamed feelings you have and share them with others to make them real.

It turns out that trying stuff outside your field of expertise is correlated with big achievements. The average scientist is about as likely to have a hobby as any member of the public. However, eminent scientists (members of the Royal Society or National Academy of Sciences) are nearly twice as likely to have one. Nobel Prize–winning scientists? Almost three times as likely...

So many great takeaways! Especially the fact that having a goal, writing it down and ACTIVELY working towards that goal makes you feel like you’re in control. Get this, the feeling of being in control even when you’re not relives stress. 🤔🤔#barkingupthewrongtree #ericbarker
