I had an amazing evening, listening to Edwidge Danticat, and hearing her challenging, yet hopeful words on the theme of home. I am grateful. #edwidgedanticat #thedewbreaker #literatureislife #literatureteacher #bibliophile #booknerd #messiahcollege #home

Edwidge Danticat
B:Jan 19, 1969 Port-au-Prince, Haiti
“Life was neither something you defended by hiding nor surrendered calmly on other people's terms, but something you lived bravely, out in the open, and that if you had to lose it, you should lose it on your own terms.” ― The Dew Breaker
Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat (yes, Haiti is a Latin American nation) was born in Port-au-Prince in 1969, and immigrated to New York at the age of 12. Danticat’s love for the written word led to her earning a BA in French Literature, and later on she earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Brown University. Her first novel Breath, Eyes, Memory… was published in 1994, and since, Danticat has written several other books, including the riveting novel, The Farming Bones. Danticat has won dozens of awards for her titles, including the Langston Hughes award and the National Book Award. - Madame Noire

"Breath, Eyes, Memory" #EdwidgeDanticat ❤📚❤ This Book!!! I just want to scream and scream #Haitians Forgive me, from behalf of "white" normal people!!! What you had to go through and still are, in the name of any fucking thing, done by "white" fucking people - excuse you for my French, but I don't care even if you do! This is only a case of one family! There are hundreds of thousands more out there been raped, disgraced, tortured, disrespected, etc!!! I can't wait to meet you #EdwidgeDanticat 🙏😍🙏 thanks for shocking, powerful, awakening and reminding masterpiece ❤
#KeepCalmItsaReadTime 📚 👓
P. S. "A view from the bridge" - we discussed it today at class and I got cleared on many occasions in the play. One thing is pure at least - you don't deserve authority by lessening others, by disrespect, and fear, and by setting up those who try to survive and save their families. None of such creatures end up well. Justice is no myth. It exists. And it always awaits 😉

A must read for those interested in women's writing. Author Dr. Simone A. James Alexander, in this work, shows that over time #blackwomen have used their bodily presence to complicate and challenge a migratory process often forced upon them by men or #patriarchal society. Through in-depth study of selective texts by #AudreLorde, #EdwidgeDanticat, #MaryseConde, and #GraceNichols, Alexander challenges the stereotypes ascribed to black female #sexuality, subverting it's assumed definition diseased, passive, or docile. This was my second time reading this book, but the emotional impact did not fade over time. It’s a great book, but definitely deals with many dark and graphic topics. Re-read as part of my book group’s series on American immigrant narratives, and looking forward to hearing how many of the older members of the group reacted to the themes presented. .

A quarta das nossas cinco autoras da Puñado 3 é ninguém mais, ninguém menos que a Edwidge Danticat (Haiti/Eua)! Escolhemos o conto "Entre a piscina e as gardênias", do livro "Krik? Krak!", que tem nove histórias e um epílogo. A tradução está sendo feita do inglês para o português, pela Raquel. O tipo de coisa difícil de comemorar o suficiente, mas agradecemos a ela e à agente Amara Hoshijo, que é um amor ☇.

Some accounts are perfectly staged and I love them for it. But this is what I’m staring out right now, little messy, an imperfect shot. I’m about to finish this book and leave behind the Haiti I just started to get to know and I’m not ready. I would love recommendations for other Haitian novels or novels about the Haitian diaspora. Also, read this is as a novel or read it as a collection of connected short stories. But either way, read this book.

“I have always enjoyed cemeteries. Altars for the living as well as resting places for the dead, they are entryways, I think, to any town or city, the best places to become acquainted with the tastes of the inhabitants, both present and gone” ©️ Edwidge Danticat.

Envisioned as a response to The Fire Next Time, James Baldwin’s groundbreaking 1963 essay collection, The Fire This Time reflects on the past, present, and future of race in America. These groundbreaking essays and poems about race—collected by National Book Award-winner Jesmyn Ward and written by the most important voices of her generation—are “thoughtful, searing, and at times, hopeful.
