Zach is the coffee buyer in our family and I just didn’t pay attention, but recently I looked into coffee producing practices And knew we needed to do better. Did you know that “shade grown” and “direct trade” labels are completely unregulated? Like “cage free” labels on eggs, this does not mean what you think it means. It COULD mean that the company is doing what you think and hope, but if you don’t do your research to make sure they really are, it means absolutely nothing.

I learned about a label I was unfamiliar with, “Bird Friendly Certified”. This certification comes from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and mandates extremely strict adherence to guidelines of shade-grown coffee - and also requires the coffee to be organic.

I’ve realized no one certification really covers it all, and each certification has very different positive aspects to it with only some overlapping. Zach stumbled upon @counterculturecoffee ; and I really love what they’re doing with their transparency. They’re also widely available. I was hoping for something a bit more local, though, and found a roaster in my backyard, Swings. They practice direct trade in the form of their home grown initiatives, are Bird Friendly certified (which means they’re also shade grown and organic), donate all their used grounds for composting in the community, and really uphold sustainable and fair practices from beginning to end.

Going to the store and grabbing something off the shelf is easy. It’s supposed to be: the companies don’t want you to see, because then you wouldn’t buy. The true price you or others are paying for that product is hidden. None of us WANT to be directly responsible for a farmer living in poverty, rainforests being destroyed, people working for below minimum wage and on and on - but just because you don’t see it directly doesn’t mean you aren’t responsible. I know so much else comes into play: busy lives and budgets. But can we really afford to offset these costs when we know what they’re doing on the back end? A little research and you can be an informed consumer making better choices and feeling good about the company that you support. And drinking amazing ☕️

Unfortunately UPS lost our shipment of products, including our direct-trade coffee, that we needed for an event in Austin, TX last weekend. It finally arrived yesterday, but it was too late! Now, we have an overflowing supply of coffee here in TX, so we thought why not turn a frustrating shipping situation into something good for our DFW Friends!! Our 12 oz. bags of whole bean and ground coffee varieties (including decaf) are now $8 (retail is normally $12) and our single-serve boxes (24 count) are now $13 (normally $18)!! Pick up locations: Grapevine and Flower Mound. Contact us if you're interested in purchasing. Take this opportunity to stock up or buy some stocking stuffers for the coffee-lovers in your lives!! As a reminder, your purchases benefit forever the lives of the Coffee Farmers in Uganda, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia that are working hard to bring you these premium coffee beans.

You can’t get coffee any fresher than a delivery that was roasted this morning. And, read the back of the label, too. Peixoto “Crop to Cup” quality and transparency means so much to us and pairs well with why we got into craft chocolate in the first place. We are proud to serve Peixoto coffee, offer whole beans for you to brew at home and feature our popular Peixoto Mocha and seasonal Peixoto Peppermint Mocha chocolates every day (while they last). @peixotocoffee
