Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, 1971.
This starred Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, and Peter Ostrum.
Gene played Willy Wonka, the owner of a candy factory, who has put together a contest where kids around the world get a chance to find the ‘golden ticket’, that’s hidden in only five chocolate bars. Five, people. Kids all over, and the grown ups too, want to win it. The factory Willy Wonka owns is very mysterious, since “nobody ever goes in, and nobody ever comes out”. Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), wants to win a golden ticket more than anyone. He lives with his family in a very small house (so small, this grandparents-both sets-sleep in the living room!), and is poor. Charlie dreams of winning. But as the contest goes on, other kids win except for him. Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregard, Mike Tee Vee, and Veronica Salt, are the kids who win.
Charlie is very sad as time goes by. His Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson), is aware of his grandson’s wishes, and he even buys him a chocolate bar. But no golden ticket. However one day, Charlie is walking by the local candy shop and spies some money in a gutter. He takes the money, and treats himself to some chocolate. Two bars, and one, contains the golden ticket! He is overjoyed and runs home! His family doesn’t believe him at first, since the world thinks the last ticket has been found. But that was fake. This is real. Charlie is allowed to take one family member with him to the factory, and he wants to take his grandpa Joe.
Joe isn’t sure he can go, since he’s been in bed for a long time. But he has to go for Charlie. So he gets up! It’s a golden ticket miracle!
The big day arrives for the factory visit. The crowd is huge around the factory, all wanting a glimpse of Willy Wonka. Willy Wonka plays a trick on everyone and pretends he can’t walk very well...but can! Silly Wonka!
So all the kids come into the factory. They start to experience the wonder of the factory! They walk through a room that goes smaller the more you walk in it, lick fruit wallpaper, and head into the main candy room, with a chocolate river, edible flowers, gummy bears on trees, etc! It’s a sweet tooth’s dream!
However, we then lose one kid........
