Finally got to see #CityHallStation today. I kinda love you sometimes, New York 🖤
Continuing my vintage postcard project… I'm sharing a long-neglected collection of cards bought 30 or more years ago on Instagram, on my FB page and in a FB group called Old Images of New York. Love that this one has the succinct equivalent of a text message on the back, mailed with a penny stamp from New York to Boston on June 2, 1919. This is the magnificently vaulted and tiled City Hall subway station; note the chandeliers and the uniformed employees on the platform. The station has been out of service since 1945, but it is intact and can be visited on occasion with the New York Transit Museum. Those are Gustavino tiles, patented construction system for vaulted ceilings, also found in the Manhattan Municipal Building above the station. Will let the historians among you fill in further details. #vintagepostcards #oldnewyork #VintageSubway #cityhallstation #gustavino #NewYorktransitMuseum

Of all the abandoned sites scattered throughout New York City, few have a reputation as great as the old City Hall Station. Decommissioned in 1945, the station once served as the southern terminus of the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT), which ran from City Hall to Grand Central, across 42nd street to Times Square and all the way north to 145th Street along Broadway. While you can view the station by staying on a downtown-bound 6 Train past the last stop, physically visiting the space is a rare and special treat. We were lucky enough to be granted access on a special tour hosted by the NY Transit Museum. Visit www.untappedcities.com to see more pictures of our trip!
