Album: Modal Soul
Artist: Nujabes
as my personal favorite producer of all time, nujabes will always have a special place in my heart. the way he samples and uses drum beats just amazes me every time i listen to his music. released one year after adding his production to the soundtrack of samurai champloo, Modal Soul, a 14 track venture of happiness was released. while half the track is instrumentals, the other half are tracks assisted by features from western artists. first of all, all the features on this album are excellently placed, and every featured artist delivers a soulful and energetic performance. whether it be pase rock's spoken word verses on The Sign, underrated rapper and femcee Shing02 and Apani B's verses on Luv(sic.) pt3 and Thank you, respectively, or even Uyama Hiroto's sax riffs on the title track. every feature adds to the tracks, and there aren't any features that decline the enjoyment of the album. what really makes this album stabd out is the immaculate production. nujabes has a wonderful knack for taking creative samples, and adding in a beat that perfectly complements the sample. tracks like Music is Mine, flowers, The Sign, Thank you all contain such layered production, with pianos, strings, trumpets, guitars, etc. Many of Nujabes' influences are noticeable here, from east coast jazz hip hop, traditional march, even classical swing jazz.

although there are many other producers i haven't fully explored (rza, premier, dilla, madlib, etc.), for now, Nujabes is my favorite producer of all time. his music is soulful, indulging, and is beautifully made. here are some of my favorite/essential Nujabes tracks.

“Nothing Good Ever Comes Easy”
As time moves forward, I think Kali is becoming my favorite female artist. Her rotation of music brings me happiness, recollections of me coming home and vibing out to her music always crosses my mind. It’s only a matter of time before she releases a full-length project as Por Vida released back in 2015. A collaborative EP between her and Daniel Caesar is something I think about a lot, and I think it’s pretty likely something of that caliber is bound to happen too

N.E.R.D is one of my favorite groups. Skateboard P, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley make some of the most unique sounds we’ve ever heard. Mixing Rock, Hip-Hop, Rap, and Alternative. With Pharrell’s legendary producing, N.E.R.D has made some of the most enjoyable songs of this decade. Classics likes “Rockstar”, “Lapdance”, and recently “Lemon.” Every project they’ve released over the last 15 years has shown a different side of the group. NO ONE EVER REALLY DIES, shows a more experimental/hip-hop fusion. While records on, In Search Of, show a Rock/Punk element while maintaining that Hip-Hop feel. Can we just appreciate Pharrell’s ability to make some of the catchiest hooks and choruses on songs. Not even for N.E.R.D, but for his solo and featured work. When I was younger, I never really appreciated N.E.R.D and the boundaries of music they pushed until recently. I’ve been listening to them for a while now and so should you. #pharrell
