KOH RONG SAMLOEM (02/12/2017)

Visiting this beautiful island of Cambodia really was one of my highlights of our trip! The island doesn’t have any roads, street lights, WiFi, transportation, public services, and very few places for tourists to stay - less than 3 years ago there was only two or 3 hostels for visitors to use. We were only meant to stay here for one night which turned into two and then we kept extending our stay as we never felt ready to leave, our host family didn’t speak any English but they were the most caring people who communicated with us through laughing and smiles both morning and night. One day we were told by another backpacking couple there was a place on the island called Clear Water Bay we should 100% visit little did we know this would entail a trek through the sea and then a climb up and through a jungle with lots of tropical creepy crawlies and snakes 🐍 It was a tough unplanned journey not suitable in sliders but totally worth it when we reached clear sea water white sand and a treehouse hostel, it was the most peaceful and deserted place we had yet come across that I fell in love with ... I was too in ore to remember to take any photos ☹️ 📷 We waited for a night where the moon wasn’t shining so bright to walk along the beach to discover something we had never seen before - plankton in the sea, little living organisms that live in the sea which glow bright blue in darkness 🌀 this island was a real hidden gem we never wanted to leave.

Occasionally we go back and revisit a place from our past travels. Often drawn back by nostalgic memories. In places like South Africa, returning only deepens the experience and we find ourselves returning again and again. But sometimes, returning yields the opposite. If there’s one constant in travel it’s that places change. And change can mean a place you once visited is no longer there. .
Siem Reap, Cambodia is one such place. When we first visited in 2001 it was a dusty little town with a handful of guesthouses and not much else. When we returned in 2016, the town we remembered was gone. Replaced by a thriving tourist hub complete with a Park Hyatt, high end boutiques, and more restaurants and bars than one could visit in a month. Was all this change good? I suppose the answer lies with the beholder. Ankor’s temples - the reason for coming - are as stunning as ever. And today, it’s a more comfortable place to visit. But for us at least, Siem Reap lost that dusty backwater vibe and the temples their Tomb Raider-like feel. If it’s your first visit, none of this is likely to matter. It’s an extraordinary place. It’s just a place I wish we’d left to memory, as returning re-wrote a perfect experience better left alone.

Beware the monks. They aren't all as innocent as they appear.

If anyone’s been wondering why I’ve been dumping a ton of old photos into my story lately, I’ve been working on curating the highlighted stories on my profile to give a better look into some of the places I’ve been to. They’re not awfully descriptive, but there are some nice full sized photos and blurry videos on there that I wanted to share. I already have stories up for Vietnam and Cambodia. More to come soon! 🌎
Он завораживает свой красотой❤️🌎✨#ankorwat #cambodia #cambodian #photographer #travel #trip #travelblogger #travelphotography #instagood #instagram #mylove #mylife #mytravelgram #vscocam #vsco #followme #history #architecturelovers
