POOR SQUAT MECHANICS!

I recently came across a footballer and asked him to squat, he then proceeded to box squat. I said no a full squat, he looked at me and pancaked a squat and apparently some football coach set up a program for his team to train box squats and he has never done a full squat. I told him to fire the coach immediately! All jokes aside.

I could not believe an athlete was telling me he could not perform a functional movement like a full Squat. I commonly see people like runners have ankle issues due to extremely tight calves but I never met a person who I couldn’t teach a below parallel squat to.

Refer to Exhibit A. The lifter is allowed to dorsiflex at the ankle and push the knees over the toes, he keeps an upright squat.
Refer to Exhibit B. The lifter’s dorsiflexion of the ankle joint is inhibited by a piece of wood and this causes a pancake like squat.

If you are constantly inhibited by poor ankle dorsiflexion you will live your training career in the belief that your squats are unfixable. My advice is pre-stretch your calves, perform 20-30 Reps of seated calf raises, elevated your heels on plates and squat, spend time at the end of your session on mobility.

Also point those toes out to make your knees push outward because your femur could be blocking your hip from facilitating a deep squat and causing you to pancake.

However 9 times out of 10 the ankle is causing the issue due to severe calf tightness, not bad knees, not weak glutes, not tight anything or poor this or that. People need to stop overthinking and just do.

Squat ass to grass. Elevate your heels > Toes out > Break at the knees (not hips) > knees out > keep sitting until your hamstring presses against your calf. Don’t push your hips back and stay as upright as possible. That’s how you squat!

I was really feeling myself in this outfit 😍. I rarely put on makeup, blow dry AND straighten my hair (#momlife). I love my legs and I should wear heels more often 😉👠🤣

🤷🏻‍♂️From #teamnocalves 2 #teambigcalves in ONLY 6 weeks of making them a priority in my training. .
✅My favorite #calvesworkout incorporates something called “21 Calves” - and you do 7 reps at 3 different foot positions on the #calf machine of your choice for a total of 21 reps. (7 reps with feet pointing forward, 7 reps with feet pointing in, 7 reps with feet pointing out)
.
🔥Do this for a few sets at the end of your workout and you will have #calvesonfire ! The secret is high reps and maximizing the “burn” with calves + hitting them from multiple angles. .
🙎🏻‍♂️Remember, if your #leanbulking NOW is the time to work on your weak points. Progress is going to be way slower when you are shredding!

Yesterday when working my calves I included these reverse calf raises to work the oft forgotten tibialis anterior(front) muscle. It's located near the shin and is visible when performing a toe raise. When working your lower legs incorporate exercises to work this muscle for nice full looking calves.☺👊

Have you ever tried foam rolling your calf muscles?
It will help improve your ankle mobility, which will result in a world of amazing things...
•Better feet
•Deeper Demi plies
•Higher jumps •Decreased risk of injury (Just to name a few!)
I dare you to give it a go before or after class (or both)! 😏👌🏼
