#MIBACT #nationalgallery #1522 dat. #Villa Francesco in #armour. I have recently published this partrait in an essay about #arms the catalogue about the #Siege of #Florence in 1530 held in #Casa #Bonarroti and organized by Sandro #Cecchi. The sitter is a 'marquise' and isinteresting to notice that his #weaponry is for service on foot. The #corselet , a specific suit of armour with no leg defence is in #german style and particulary the #helmet (a #burgonet with buff) shows some features which can be found only in the contemporary works for #Charles the fifth #Emperor. This led to think that the suit might be by the armourer of Augsburg Kolman #Helmschmid which is one of the most interesting artist of my favourite field of study.

This is a very brutish and intimidating suit of armor made in oversized proportions essentially to fit a fat guy....King Henry VIII. While King Henry wasn’t always a fat guy, he gained a significant amount of weight alongside several health issues toward the end of his life, when this armor was crafted for him in 1544. Despite his cumbersome size and poor health, he still fought on the battlefield. The helmet is of the burgonet style and features a falling buffe. The suit was forged in Italy, likely for the king’s final military campaign at the second Siege of Boulogne. #kinghenryviii #english #monarchy #kingofengland #royalty #armor #armour #britishhistory #englishhistory #metropolitanmuseumofart #italy #italian #france #boulogne #anneboleyn #medieval #renaissance #middleages #historical #history #combat #warfare #militaryhistory #siege #knights #burgonet #tudor #houseoftudor

In advance of a recent Arms and Armor Friends Group event (which we will be posting about soon!) we took the opportunity to pull about a dozen objects from our storeroom. Dating from the 15th through the 17th century, each object was chosen because it illuminated key aspects of how armor was constantly (and cleverly) reengineered over time to move with, or accommodate, the human body while effectively protecting it––a theme of the Friends event. Here Curator in Charge @pierre.terjanian discusses an Italian closed burgonet made around 1560. Among other things, on cavalry helmets of this type, the face defense, called a falling buffe, can be lowered in three sections for better visibility and ventilation.

This is a rare, late example of French embossed armor. The gilt fleur-de-lis rivet heads along the edges, the fleur-de-lis plate at the apex of the bowl, and the laurel branches around the collar suggest the burgonet was made for Louis XIII of France (reigned 1610–43).

Study from a reference - Burgonet in the Form of a Dolphin 1540/1545 made by Giovanni Paolo Negroli.
Within next few studies I'll try to draw elements from one of the castles in Poland I've been to recently 😊

And here is the peak in all its glory (i.e. separated from the composite helmet). Have a great Weekend, Everyone!
.
Peak from a Ceremonial Helmet, attributed to the Helmschmid workshop, probably Lorenz Helmschmid (German, active 1467-1515), German (Augsburg), c. 1505-20; iron alloy (steel); @philamuseum The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Bequest of Carl Otto Kretzschmar von Kienbusch, 1977 (1977-167-80b).

FRIDAY FACE - happily looking back at a weird and tumultuous week. This is an old photograph of a rather interesting helmet of armet-type in the Museum's collection. It first 'appeared' early in the 20th century as part of a "complete" and "homogenous" armor. Carl Otto Kretzschmar von Kienbusch acquired it, but then the armor turned out to be largely composite, so he gave it away and only kept the helmet. The latter entered the Museum's collection as part of the Kienbusch Bequest in 1977, but then the helmet turned out to be composite too: the skull, or bowl, the cheek pieces, and the upper part of the visor are genuine and of about the same date but do not belong together, while the lower part of the visor (in the shape of a grinning mouth) is a modern addition. The most striking and important part of this assembly is, of course, the "visor" ... only, it turned out not to be a visor at all but the brim, or peak, of an extremely rare open-faced type of helmet made specifically for ceremonial purposes: less than a handful of comparative pieces are known to survive. [All these findings are not mine, by the way, but the summed up research of some of my predecessors.] The peak was just photographed again on its own, and I will post one of those images a little later today .

Since there is no Game of Thrones this weekend (yes, I am one of "those people", but c'mon, are you that surprised? 😜), and not for a very long time, I am posting this helmet crest for the burgonet of Sforza Pallavicino for a little dragon action. Milan, Italy, ca. 1560, steel and gold. #themet #armsandarmour #armsandarmor #armor #helmet #crest #dragon #italy #steel #gold #burgonet #gameofthrones #dracarys #flashbackfriday

A burgonet helmet, Nuremberg, circa 1570. Beschau and unknown armourer's mark. The elegant shape and decoration strongly suggest that the presend helmet was made for a high ranking officer to be used in the field. Untouched condition, original blueing still preserved. #armor #armour #burgonet #armsandarmour #platearmour #platearmor #helmet #antiqueweapons #antiquearms #antiquearm #historicweapons #howtospendit #luxury #collectingarms #антикварноеоружие #antiquecollection #antiquearmsandarmour #rare #renaissance
