Next week she'll be 5 months old. There has been so many challenges in this short period of time. So much patience was needed from both of us and neither of us master that quality. Nevertheless, we just have to keep trying and don't give up. #breastfeedingchallenge #nursingstrike #doesntsuck #slowletdown #doesntnap #fomobaby #yolobaby

some beautiful moments captured at this years Breastfeeding Challenge in celebration of Breastfeeding Week. #breastfeedingweek2017
I had so much fun photographing this event for the third year in a row. Big thanks to the organizers and to all of the Moms, babies and supporters who braved the cold, windy weather (and even some rain at the end) to celebrate Breastfeeding Week.

Please feel free to tag yourself, and share with your friends and family. #breastfeedingchallenge2017 #breastfeedingchallenge #cranbrookphotographer #cranbrookbc #breastfeedingmamas #supportbreastfeeding #breastfeedingawareness #nurturingsessions #breastfeedingphotography #breastfeedingphotographer #normalizebreastfeeding #cranbrookbc

It's Breastfeeding Challenge today to kick off World Breastfeeding Week. Mom says breastfeeding IS a challenge! I'm a breastfed kid, but now it's only at night when I go to bed. Yet if I had my way, I'd breastfeed morning, noon, and night with a whole lot of snacks in between. I love it. A lot. That's been a challenge for Mommy.
It's not only nutritious and delicious, but it's also comforting. There are days when I'm tired and I just want boob. There are days when I don't feel well and it's all I'll take. And when we travel and I won't eat any food, we both know breastfeeding has been a surefire way to make sure I get some nutrition.
Mom wants to give me what's healthiest for me and we love our connection. We've loved sitting on the couch cuddle-nursing while reading books. She loved when I'd settle down and fall asleep on her.
But there have been many times and days when she'd get tired of me pawing her. Most days, I wouldn't even say hi, but instead would point to her chest and say Boob. Mom said sometimes she felt like a milk machine and she'd get tired of me pulling down her shirt in front of people. It's not easy to say no to me and it has been really frustrating.
It took a trip with Mom away for 5 days for me to realize I can let go. She got back and we had one day of regular feedings, but after that we both knew it was time for breastfeeding to stop. I got really sad a few times, but we cuddled and I'm getting better at understanding. I'm happy with nursing before bedtime and I think we're both enjoying that comfort connection again. We'll eventually stop all-together, but that time will come when it's right for both of us.
Every Mom and baby is different. It comes easily for some and not for others. It's good to normalize breastfeeding, but it's not okay to shame others for what they are or are not able to do or for the decisions they make. It's tough enough being a mom without feeling like you've failed if your baby can't latch or you have to supplement with formula. It's not as easy as it looks. We're all doing the best we can.
So good job, moms (and dads)! Thanks for keeping us fed!
