Yesterday was a tough one on my camera. Hiking up to Siler Bald, I hit a sheet of ice and fell flat on my camera, the corner of that Really Right Stuff L bracket pushed into my chest cavity and left a nice bruise. Two and a half hours later, after being out in 12-15 degree temps, iced buttons, and a couple hundred shots, I got my D850 home and not a scratch on her. The “image” on the LCD is a reflection of the trees behind me as the clouds rolled in right as I arrived to the top of Siler Bald.

Day 3 snow day, y'all. 😳 @buncombeschools are closed again tomorrow. Fri-yay, indeed (at least for those teachers + students 🙌) // 📸: @ashevilleschool
My father used to always tell me, “You’re never stuck”. Those words wrapped a comfort around my heart on the scariest of days with the biggest of decisions.

See, my dad knew I got this fear from him, this fear of being trapped in pain. My obsession with peacefulness blinding me from the beauty of ups and downs, from failure and success, from darkness and light as it has done for him throughout his own life. If we don’t know the future, how can we know if we really want what we think we want?

My dad is one of the gentlest men you will ever meet. He is unlike any father I have ever known, but as I’ve grown I’ve learned that my parents are imperfect too. They are human, with their own deep struggles that have molded his story into this life he is living. So I take these 3 words as a heartfelt truth, a gift that he has learned himself and wants to share with his daughter so she never has to feel the fear he felt.

Sometimes, my fear of being trapped in pain keeps me stagnant, motionless. I could be a recluse and never experience the world, unsure what any step forward could mean. His words - “you are never stuck”, have been my beacon. They have been the force that pulls me forward, resting in the knowledge that no matter what choice I make, I will always have the power to shift my life.

One year ago I flew to Bariloche, Argentina with a suitcase of backpacking gear I didn’t know how to use, and not a clue of what I just got myself into. The mountains gave me a space to look at my life from an outside perspective. Waking up in a soaking wet sleeping bag before the sun, and laying down at night covered in dirt and sweat left no space for me to hide my true colors. I love the memories I took home from these three months, and seeing all the little impacts Outward Bound has on me day to day. I love the crew I got to experience hell and back with, and of course all the mountains. I will now always think of Nahuel Huapi National Park, the Everglades, and the Blue Ridge Mountains as home.

#tbt to the great bar park/playground I had across the street from my old house in North Carolina! Almost everyday I would take the pups to run and play for hours while I practiced my Calisthenics! Miss these days, love those pups!
