3 cheers for the green metallic E. coli colonies we isolated on pink-purple EMB, from water samples contaminated with coliforms!! This was performed as part of the Confirmed Test stage of MPN. Beautiful, aren't they?

Background: EMB is a selective and differential media that supports the growth of Gram negative, lactose fermenting and non-fermenting colonies. While the fermenting colonies appear metallic green (as observed in the plate), the non-fermenting colonies appear colourless.

Since lab work is on in full swing before the winter shut down, we thought we would share with you sone of the work. We are working on water analysis by the MPN method. This method allows us to establish Most Probable Number of coliforms present in a given water sample. The presence of coliforms is a bad sign for the potability water. The analysis is performed over a course of 3 days, using different media, and techniques over the course of a Presumptive Test, a Confirmed Test, and a Complete Test. Come let's look at what E. coli looks like on endoagar - a streaking that is part of the confirmed test. (Hint: It shines!) ⭐

Per centrifugazione le diverse componenti del sangue vengono separate in base al loro peso: il plasma è la parte fluida di colore giallo e rappresenta il volume maggiore (55%), gli elementi figurati costituiscono il 45% e si stratificano verso il fondo della provetta, di questi solo l'1% circa sono globuli bianchi e piastrine (buffy coat) e la rimanente frazione (44% del totale) è data da un'enorme quantità di globuli rossi (eritrociti).
Il siero è ciò che rimane dopo la coagulazione del sangue che fa precipitare e quindi elimina dal plasma gli elementi figurati e la fibrina.

O OX513A, que foi criado pela Universidade de Oxford, na Inglaterra. Ele é idêntico ao Aedes aegypti – exceto por dois genes modificados, colocados pelo homem. Um deles faz as larvas do mosquito brilharem sob uma luz especial (para que elas possam ser identificadas pelos cientistas). O outro é uma espécie de bomba-relógio, que mata os filhotes do mosquito. A ideia é que ele seja solto na natureza, se reproduza com as fêmeas de Aedes e tenha filhotes defeituosos – que morrem muito rápido, antes de chegar à idade adulta, e por isso não conseguem se reproduzir. Com o tempo, esse processo vai reduzindo a população da espécie, até extingui-la. Recentemente, a Comissão Técnica Nacional de Biossegurança, um órgão do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, aprovou o mosquito. E o Brasil se tornou o primeiro país do mundo a permitir a produção em grande escala do OX513A – que agora só depende de uma última liberação da Anvisa. A Oxitec, empresa criada pela Universidade de Oxford para explorar a tecnologia, acredita que isso vai ocorrer. Tanto que acaba de inaugurar uma fábrica em Campinas para produzir o mosquito.

#wowwednesday It is known that after a baby is born the placenta cord is cut off and that's the end of that.
